I'm sick of accidently hitting neutral.

http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/3 62754.html?1211939220

Most the time when going from 1st to 2nd under normal driving there's some clattering going on. I also find myself in neutral about 1/10 times.

My wife's 06xb9sx doesn't have this issue whatsoever. She was riding mine and the first major road she turned on she got stuck in neutral. I'm pretty sure it's not me because I have to pull the clutch all the way in, pause for a split second, and then give a nice whack up.

Does anyone have an idea what parts I should look at replacing?

I'd post in the knowledge vault, but there's not much action going on over there.

Have you adjusted the primary yet? How about changing to sythetic primary fluid? and finally, the clutch?

Yep, yep, and yep.

The first time I checked the primary it was dead on. I decided to see what would happen if I removed a smigen of the slack. I saw no difference. Next I'm going to add a lil more slack to it and see what happens.

The oil level in the primary is of great importance as well.

Two steps to adjusting the clutch.
1. Adjusting at the clutch itself 1/4 turn past just getting tight.
2 Adjusting at the cable below the neck.

If you did both of those I don't know anything else you could do besides internal stuff.

Try adjusting the shift linkage.

Ideally the link joint on the shifter should be centered on the red line, like trans shaft link. I could lengthen the shift link rod, but doing that (on this bike) places the shift lever too high.

I'm not familiar with the shift-pawl on XB's (it's totally different than a tubers) but isn't there an adjustment there for engagement to the shift pins under the detent plate?

hey xl_cheese... keep us posted if you make any progress. I have the same deal. Tried everything I could think of, adjustments, shifting hard, shifting slow (pausing), etc. I also hear clattering going on. All this is only between 1st & 2nd. The rest is smooth. Mine's an '05xb9sx.

FYI only...

I once owned a Dodge Stealth V-6, twin-turbo, all wheel drive and all wheel steer and WHAT a CAR!! But, I was having the 5-speed trans being professionally rebuilt. During one of the visits I was talking with the owner of the shop about his line of work...we started talking about trans and sticky shifts and he stated that they will put a small amount of ATF in the trans to smooth out the shift.

Last month I was doing maintenance on my bike and after R&R primary fluid I added 2-oz. of Mobil 1 syn. ATF to the primary and must say my bike shift is like silk, extra smooth and the shift seems quicker with less effort. I have a '04 XB12S, still makes noise from 1st to 2nd but it’s a HD.

I also change my primary at the same time I do my motor.

Again, FYI only...

I was starting to get missed shifts on my '07. I made a slight adjustment on the primary about a 1/4" and it's a lot better now. Still not a Jap gearbox but not bad either.

Sounds to me like a bad shifter drum / 1st-2ng gear fork. Cases ever been split? What kind of primary lubricant are you using.

Try some Formula+ ...good stuff

if that doesn't work, try inverting your shift pattern (GP Shift style 1up 4 down, more positive shifting, and more natural once you learn it) If you need details on how to do so, just let me know, takes two mins, and once you learn it, you'll never go back. Or... take it back in under warranty, if it is in warranty.
