Just wondering what kind of mileage I should have on the bike before switching to a synthetic oil?

well i'd do about 3 to 4k and switch. only reason I say wait that long is there is no need to waste the oil that comes in her

Engines now days are ready from the get go. breaking in is really a thing of the past.

Well i'd wait a few hundred miles to be safe, then all go from there.

I did the first oil change at around 400 miles. Can't see going 1000 on a new engine, now just wondering if things are bedded in enough or should I wait awhile.

I am running the Dino Oil until 5000 miles. Just to let everything settle in. I changed it at 250 and at 1500 and you should have seen the plugs! Both had bits of metal stuck to them. Next change it's Syn in both the motor and Primary (the HD stuff in the primary for sure). I do the same with my cars BTW and have never had a problem.

I've done all my bikes at the 1000 mile mark. Switched all the fluids to HD Syn 3 and never looked back!

Metal chunks!!!!!!
not good at all!

I guess you should change it sooner then 3k on the first change huh! sorry, Ive bought all my bikes used, so thats something I just didnt think about :-)

Every car I deal with at work runs synthetic oil (Mobil 1) from the get go!
and doesnt get changed for 6 to 7k. then every 13 to 14k after wards.

I spoke with HD on this issue and they stated after the 1st 1500-2000 miles. Stating that the motor is still breaking in, syn is just too slick...to sum it up.

I let the dealer change do a 500 miles check and after that went to 2,000 and drain both the primary and the engine and replaced them with syn, big improvement, specially in shifting.

I think who you spoke to may be wrong. Syn 3 meets or exceeds all recommendation's. Also it comes stock in V-Rods and all Screaming Eagle Models... air cooled or liquid cooled from the factory. My XB's got switched out to Syn 3 at 500 miles. Show me where on the bottle it says you shouldn't run HD's own product before any set mileage. If they don't recommend it then they need to display that with a caution. Syn 3 is a great product.... run it and enjoy your bike.

Several major automobile manufacturers ship Mobil 1 full synthetic in their crankcases straight from the factory.

My initial oil changes on the XB9sx were at 500 miles, then 1500 miles, then at 3000 miles.

I didn't use full synthetic for those first two oil changes, but just because there was no point in spending extra money for oil that will be replaced quickly.

From 3000 on it was full syn though.

S&S ships their motors with Mobil 1 or Castrol synthetic I can't remember which one. But these are brand new high performance motors.
