My 2007XB12R is in the shop again under warantee repair for the same problem for the third time in a year. First time was oil leak from stock rear rocker base gasket. First solution: replaced rear rocker base gasket. Mechanic did not check for warp of rocker assembly. Second time: oil leak from rear rocker base gasket. Second solution: Mechanic determined that the rear rocker assembly was warped, ordered new one and replaced gaskets. Third time (now): oil leak from rear rocker base gasket. Solution: Buell corporate admits that they are shipping warped rocker assemblies new from factory. Mechanic didn't check new part from last time, so here we go again... BTW the part is now back-ordered. Anybody else aware of this issue??? Hex | ||

Never heard of it, never seen it, but at least they admitted it. I'm usually pretty thorough, and I have NEVER checked a rocker box for warpage, so I would have gotten caught, too. It's probably just a bad batch of parts. | ||

I have an '07 12R and no leaks yet -- hopefully it is a small scale thing. Think I will go downstairs and check just to be sure though... Hope they get you fixed and back on the road asap! | ||

Hex, Changed mine 2wice in 18,000 miles. 1st time at the dealer. 2nd I did following the service manual. Was the rear back left corner both times. I am watching it again. Has been 300 miles since I changed them, so far, so good. C. | ||

Hex, now that I read your post I'm afraid my bike might be suffering from the same thing. I pulled the breather tubes out of the airbox and made my own drain, and after about a week or so, I noticed I had some oil drip. It kinda sprayed some through the fan onto the rear hugger, and when I inspected it, I found the line had pinched between the head and frame and melted a little through, but was not oily enough to cause what I had. I figured it was this and replaced the line and changed the routing, but still I get a leak. I'm afraid to take it to the dealer because of the airbox mod and because I JUST changed the muffler for the race model... they'll say it's my fault and not covered. What are your guys' opinions? I feel no matter what, as long as I haven't messed with the heads or rocker boxes that it should be covered, I got the 3 year extended warranty. Thanks! | ||

Chris, to respond to your previous post, I am not a tech, nor a service rep for the bikes. I am a sales guy that owns and rides the hell out of my bike. I have not had any of my local guys tell me they were experiencing rocker box leaks. Warranty and manufct claims should go through the corporate process, that is the same at every dealership. If they want to push the bounds of the race can, if they can determin that installation in someway damaged the rocker boxes then it would not be covered (I personally dont see how that would happen, but again I am not a tech nor factory rep) I highly recommend getting to the shop near you that embraces, sells and stands behind Buells. Those are the guys you want twisting wrenches on your bike. Keep us posted. | ||

Could it be that the dealer tech is not torque-ing the rocker box in the correct bolt order and warping it then? I realize the dealer tech has nothing to do with an untouched bike (Laserred), but maybe they hired a new hand on the assembly line??? | ||

Any new info? What's the Buell number I would call to find out info, and maybe if a regular HD dealer (one with a good rep) could perform the repair instead of my spotty Buell dealer? | ||

P.S. I saw the leak, it's just to the left of the rear exhaust port right on the edge of the rocker box. I will try to shove my camera in there and get something that resembles a focused shot since it's so tight. Hopefully tomorrow.... | ||

I called my local stealership (Calumet) and of course they maintain they've never heard anything about this mysterious rocker box leak. Since I don't trust them, and it's really just a 1200 Sportster, can I take my bike to an H-D dealer that I trust and still be covered by warranty? Or does it have to be Buell-specific? | ||

2008 XB12Ss - rear rocker gasket leak at 3k miles. I thought I had a leak on my primary case gasket. The tech found out that the rear rocker was actually leaking and dripping oil on the primary case gasket. Replaced rear rocker gasket under warranty. Seems to be fixed and cleaned up all like new. That was 2 days ago. Guess I better keep a close on it. |
