I want to paint the side rails to match the frame. I know I can take them off to do it if need be, but is it a pain in the a$$ or can satisfactory results be obtained by painting them on the bike?

I did that to my Lightning last winter. It was a little easier for me to take one rail off at a time to paint. I took one rail off and left the other on while I sanded, primed and painted the other. That way I could leave almost everything in place while I was painting. Otherwise everything has to come off. And I definitely didn't want to leave them on the bike to paint.
