Did some reading and found out Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil is a no no for xb9s trannys and am concerned that the gear oil I just put in is ok...

I used valvoline 75w 90 synthetic gear oil...anyone have experience with it? Its waaayyy thinner than what was in there before and feels different when shifting... (the old stuff was a lot thicker and darker) Is the valvoline good and any reccomendations for the next time I change gear oil? (the manual reccomends 5k oil and gear oil changes..is that ok..use mobil 1 5w 50 in the engine)

I think it's a good bet that gear oil in general shouldn't be used. If it smells to high heaven (like most gear oil does) it contains sulfur which seems to lead to quick alternator stator failure. AFAIK, all GL-5 gear oils contain the stuff.

I'd strongly recommend you dump the stuff, refill with one of the recommended tranny lubes, run it a while (<<5000 miles), and change it again.

I'm very happy with HD's "Formula+" tranny lube in mine. Others have run all kinds of non-gear-oil lubricants with good success.

Beeb, if you wanna make your life a little bit easier, just use the same oil you put in the engine. Lots of guys on here do it this way with no harmful effects. I would definitely get that gear oil out of their. Personally, i use Formula+, but only cuz i like going to the Dealer and checking out the new bikes. It seems as they are always having concerts and various other party events there.

The clutch needs a diesel oil formulation if you cannot get the HD or Syn3.

If I recall, the Diesel oils have higher zinc concentrations needed for BOTH clutch friction and gear lubrication (I know sound like conflicting requirements) - this was based on a conversation with a NON-HD/NON-Buell person who works in lubricants for a living so is taken with a grain of salt - BUT it might be close to truth.

As a guy who has been through more than his fair share of Stators that 'may' have been killed prematurely by inappropriate gear oil, I would recommend using HD's Formula Plus. YMMV. : )

Or
Use H/D Formula +. Can't go wrong, it's what Buell recommends.
It is not over priced either, considering the bike only takes 1qt every 5k miles.

If it was my bike, I would not take the risk with the Valvoline gear oil. Mobile 1 gear oil ate my stator at 9000 miles. Bought my bike used with no warranty. Very frustrating and expensive repair. I'm using formula+ for the time being, but might switch to syn3 for the next change. Do yourself a favor...get a new gasket, drain it, with no worries.

thanks all for the great info...cked valvolines own website and it stated the 75w 90 gear oil was GL-5..same as mobil 1 gear oil...NO GOOD!

Just ran out and bought some mobil 1 synthetic motor oil 5w 50...dont want to take the chance of my tranny crapping out...taking the bike out now, going to work the gears, warm it up really well then drop the gear oil and put in the mobil 1 syn 5w 50....hope the 5w 50s good, two oil changes in two days is enough..lol

Just tossed the gear oil (some funky smelling stuff) and replaced it with mobile 1 5w 50 syn..will run it 5k then probably switch to HDs formula plus..No more worries!

Yeah, I too was caught up in the "use gear oil" fad when the XB's came out. I used Mobil-1 gear oil for maybe 6k miles and then went with whatever I was putting in the swingarm. Now the XB9S gets Formula+

The stator is charging the battery fine so I was lucky while others were not. You too I hope.
