Just picked up 06 lightning and curious about how much fan runs in normal use.

I rode 300 miles today on my Uly. Ten minutes away from the house fan came on and never shut off unit a few minutes after I got home. It did shut off while I was getting fuel and bike was off. Some people say their fan cycles on and off while riding. I have had the Uly for almost 2 years and it has only cycled back off while riding maybe three times. Also I did not sit in traffic today. Hope this helps.

12k on my Ulysses, and the only time it won't come on is short trips.

It will run a lot until the motor gets broken in, after its broken in it will still run all the time. Character is what we call it.

My fan hardly ever runs in normal use, unless it is warm and I am stopped, or in stop and go traffic. I can always count on it coming on when I turn the bike off.

05 12Scg.

My bike seems to be like Dentguy's. It's pretty much the same scenario.

Ask not how much it runs but rather how much it doesn't run.
It's much easier to add up the minutes that it isn't running than to try to add up the countless hours that it is running.

But it works. My bike has never once over heated so I have no real complaints.

My 12's fan pretty much runs all the time when the bike has reached full operating temp and doesn't shut off till after the bike is turned off. My 9 was a different story - only ever came on once the bike was shut off. Seems the 12s like to run a little hotter than the 9s (or riders are twisting the throttle harder on the 12s!!!!).

I think the fans on the XBs with the longer frames run longer because the rear cyclinder is covered more and gets less airflow. The fan on my Uly runs all the time after warm-up. It always has, regardless of ambient temp. I thought I read a post somewhere that Buell was testing a quieter fan.

The fan on my 2006 Ss seems like it is almost always on. Even at boulevard or highway speeds with temperatures in the 50's. I worry if I am stuck in any traffic on reasonably hot days but so far no problems although I do tend to shut off the engine if I get stopped for any length of time. And I have found the claim that it runs less after the engine breaks in to be false in my case as I have over 20K miles now with no change.

I got a 07 XB12Ss and it doesn't run all the time, in fact it hardly ever runs. It runs when I shut it off after a good run and it runs when I'm stuck in traffic going 25-35 mph but when I'm riding around country roads going 50-60 mph it never runs. I only got 2300 miles on it, barely broken in.

going to and from work it never comes on. even when I shut it off. Mind you I'm only a mile from work...

06 XB12Ss

Like most people on here, I have one that runs most of the time. When the bike is warmed up, the fan comes on and stays on. In hot weather, it cycles to the higher speed. In cooler weather (low 70s), it runs at the lower speed.

Jet Hot coating on headers seems to have delayed when the fan starts, but I have no valid measurements to support that gut feeling. Still worthwhile as the headers definitely radiate a lot less heat near my leg.

The XB12 engines just generate more heat than the XB9 engines. That's pretty clear from all of the postings on here over the years. And it's what I'd expect given that they are making more horsepower with more displacement on an otherwise similar engine.

When I installed an RSS it helped the fan situation.By the way when someone ask what that noise is,I tell them it is the inner cooler.

I have an 06 SS 7k with RSS, Header wrap and amsoil oil. My fan never runs when the bike is moving and only runs when I stop/ignition off after a high RPM run or the ambient temp is over 80 degrees.

Let's not forget that we may also be dealing with engineering tolerances for temperature sensors and differences in rider size and riding styles. Don't assume that a bike whose fan runs more is automatically running hotter.
