I just bought a new 07 Lightning XB12s. I absolutely love this bike. I just bought it last wednesday and already have 1,200 miles on it. I couldn't resist taking it to Arkansas last weekend to enjoy the handling. I have been riding and racing Yamahas since 2000 and still am. I bought this bike for an every day commuter and because, of course, it looks sweet. I had a blast with this bike last weekend in the twisties. The whole Buell thing is totally new to me and I need some guidance, tips and pointers. I have a few things that I would like some suggestions on.
1.) What type of oil do you guy recommend I run in this thing. I run silkolene in my Yamahas and am planning on using it in the Lightning as well unless you guys suggest something else.
2.) I was going to ask about the fan running but just read that thread about that problem. Mine runs almost non stop but I that sounds normal.
3.) Any suggestions for exhaust systems. I am looking for something with the power but not the obnoxious loud noise.
And any other information you can share about general items with this bike. I look forward to this experience and many fun miles to come.
Thanks
Matt

1. Silkolene should be fine; just observe the recommended weight.
1a. stick with harley formula + for primary/trans.

2. Yes fans run.

3. not much power is gained without going obnoxious (which is subjective.)

My advice, leave it as Buell sold it and enjoy.

welcome aboard. i have a xb9sx, just turned 6k on the od. here's my 2 cents.

1. harley syn3 engine and trans. don't know what was in it before the 5k service (i bought it this spring with 3300 mi on the od), but it does seem to rev quicker and shift smother now.

2.everything i've read about the fan deal is as the engine breaks in and loosens up, the fan will run less. mine rarely comes on while riding, usually only when i get off the freeway does it kick on unless the temps are over 90. short answer, it should run less as time goes on.

3. i think the drummer is like sex for your ears personally. check out the exhaust shoot out at www.americansportbike.com. it has audio clips and dyno shoot out sheets. best info available.

Congrats and welcome to the board.

+1 on the Syn3 in the mill and grinder.

Exhaust is a purely subjective thing around here.: ): ) I run the Buell race exhaust on both my 9 and 12 and love them. Better mid without the ear bleeding noise.

A couple more things to check often are the steering head bearings, and the primary chain adjustment. I check ever 1500-2000 miles or so.
Other then that just ride her like you stole her. XBs are very low maint bikes in comparison.

what type of racing do you do? if it's road course i'm curious of your initial impressions of the buell chassis. have you had a chance to set-up the suspension, lots of room to play with these as they are quite sensitive to small changes.

Hello Matthew! Welcome to the Asylum.

What organization do you race with? I have raced CBRs and now I race my XB9S in the CMRA.

I run the HD/Buell Formula+ in the trannie and Mobil 1 15W-50 in the engine. I also recommend checking out the exhaust shootout at American Sport Bike website.

PS I forgot to mention there are gang of us Buellers that gather most every spring and fall in NW Arkansas. Have you found HWY 123 yet?

Mikexlr650 - I do road race, I race a Yamaha YZF-R6 and R1. Last weekend we were in Arkansas and I still cant get over how awesome that bike handles. I have been there in the past on a GSXR1000 and a RC51. They dont even compare in the fun factor. I am going to a track day at Heartland Park on the 10th and I am going to take the Buell along to have some fun with and get it set up. I will let you know how that goes.

Skully - I race mostly CCS and ASRA. I was able to make it to a few AMA rounds this year, Daytona, Barber, Road America and Miller but that was getting way too expensive. I race with MRA when they come to Nebraska. I was down at Hallett with CCS a few weeks back and there were a few CMRA guys there, did you make that one?
I printed off the exhaust shootout and that is helpful. It looks like the micron makes the most power but I dont really want to get rid of the stock headers. I think they look great so I think Im going to go with a slip on since the micron only makes a couple more hp.
We only hit 123 for a little bit. It was raining saturday morning so we got a late start. We were right by it though, 74 then 123 to 65 but that was it. Let me know when you guys go down there this fall. If you dont mind and the time is right, Id love to join.

Hey--
I had a custom Sportster 04 and I was having some back problems while riding. I rode the hubby's 12S on the Mississippi River Ride and I was sold on the Buell. Later that week I begged him to go to the closest local Buell dealer to just"gaze" around and he did not know that I had take the title to my Sportster. He NEVER thought I would get rid of the Harley because I was really Brand loyal. When I rode the 12Ss I knew it was the bike for me. He was totally amazed when I pulled out the title and asked the salesman what kind of deal he could do. Of course, I already had a figure in my head and they were willing to take the figure I was willing to offer and I have not regretted it for one minute of one day! Been to two Homecomings and really looking forward to the 3rd.
