Ok so I read up that it is waiser to put a 12 inner air lid on, but my question is what year 12 is best for an `03 9 to use?and should i get the lower portion as well?
I noticed brother Cowtown had 2 wing nuts holding a portion of the lid down o that the entirety of the filter element was exposed.
and Dongalonga's inner airbox cover has some kind of cable operated mechanism ontop of his.

I'm lost, someone with the mechanical know how GPS come find me and lead me towards the better breathing airbox cover exit sign.

I use an '04 12S airbox cover with dimple, works great with the '03 9S stock lower, and yes, it does give the bike a little more umph. I've tried an open air box on my '03 9S but didn't really notice any difference, other then more valve train noise coming through the box. I do have a race pipe and race ecm installed.

The cable system is for the interactive exhaust on a 12 with stock muffler.

Any 12 airbox will work. If you want to keep the 03 style closed airbox then you want an 04-05 cover.

If you want to convert to open, you can use any 12 airbox cover. The actuator is for the 12 exhaust your 9 does not have one.

Here is a sort of how-to with pics for an open airbox. This requires removing the crank case vents from the airbox and then
routing them to a catch can of some sort...

Here is a pic from somewhere here on badweb of the cheapest version of a catch can. the pic shows everything except
the "t" that you use to join the two vents on top of the motor and the tube that routes from that "t" to the one just to
the left of the vent breather.

thank you to whomever originally posted the pic of their bike.

There are other, possibly more elegant catch cans out there. For instance I have the Norris/Drummer/American Sport Bike aluminum
catch can on my bike. They all have to accomplish 2 jobs. Vent off gasses, and trap liquid that comes out of your crank case vents. The
only questions when it comes to these are how much do you want to spend, and what looks acceptable/good to you?

Actually, they have to perform three jobs:

1. Venting off gases from the crankcase.
2. Trapping liquid which is blown out of the vents.
3. Filtering air that is sucked back into the crankcase.

Number 3 is why it's important to use a decent filter, though the long length of the hose assembly might mean that air sucked in never makes it all of the way up the hose and into the engine.
