Hello i have a firebolt XB12R its a 2004 model. ever since i have owned it for about a year now when you first start it upand ride it it cuts out and acts like its missing when giving it gas. It better when its 70 out vs 40 but still kinda does it. All i am asking is does anyone elses do this, is it normal? If now what could it be thanks.

o yea it has about 7500 miles on it.

Yeah, mine does that too... I have an '04 12S. I call it "character". The way I make it run smoother is let it idle and warm up while I'm putting my gear on. Seems to lessen the effects.

It can be annerving tho. I try to avoid much leaning as I'm leaving the parking lot on cold days. My engine "missed" while leaning as I pulled away. I had just put my foot up and quickly had to put it back down because without power and only going about 3mph the bike almost fell over! Anyway, it always seems to run strong by the time I get a block or so down the road.

Gotta love the twin.

I do that when it's cold, so does my bike!

You need to let it warm up. Don't just start a V-twin and drive off. I start it, gear up and motor on. The bike does start a little more finnicky when it's cold out. But let it warm up regardless of the temperature.

If it is EFI, it starts up on the base map. It only takes a few minutes to learn and compensate. It seems to be more noticeable if you finish up a ride and shut it down in the 80s, then start it the next morning in the 50s. It will be running lean for a few minutes, then all is well.

My Ss burps and farts when it's cold. I let it run while I put my jacket, gloves, boots ect. on. It runs like crap 'till its warm. I guess thats the EFI setting up.
I do find it rude.

My 9 does the same thing. I let it warm up for 5-10 and she's purring more like a HD engine than a top fuel dragster motor. I don't know if you guys have witnessed the same, but my fuel pump is definately louder on initial start-up when its cold.

I was told by a friend who works on these motors that you could see 5-10 more hp by running them in cooler temps.

I'm not trying to hijack this topic but...I also have a '04 12r --I've installed the k&n filter, The race ecu and, for Christmas this year I got a race muffler--I installed the race ecu first along with the k&n filter,I had the tps reset at the dealer. Ever since, I cannot just start the bike and walk away. It'll stall numerous times and not keep any kind of high idle. I have been gently easing on the throttle to keep the cold idle up to about 1200rpm until the temp. starts to come up and it'll finally idle on its own. Is this a problem with the programming in the race ecu or do I have a problem?? Maybe the race muffler will help? I just installed it over the winter and haven't had a chance to actually start it ((shame on me!!)).

Does it do it once it's fully warmed up?

Does it only do it under a certain RPM range?

Does it sound like it's popping through the intake when it "Cuts out"?

Does it do it JUST as you roll on the throttle from a coasting situation?

Does it do it while cruising steady state?

Intake leak?

The way I look at it is that if it started after it was new and it's not just a normal break in thing... It's not "character", it's broke.

Buell4me, My 06 xb12ss has all three of the race kit parts and had the same problems. It also would not even fire in the cold weather without cracking the throttle while you hit the starter. The last time I complained about this at the dealer, they reset the ecm and took it for another ride for the computer to relearn it's settings. They think that the last time it was there and they did the same thing, it was too cold for the engine to remain at operating temp and learn the correct settings. After that first time, it only ran for 8 miles and then fouled the rear plug. This time it has been fine and runs much better even though the idle never goes high when you first start it. Does anyone else have a low idle when cold and is this a problem?
The bottom line is that the ecm may need reset again and the bike ran after that at operating temp.

I too have this problem with my 2004 XB12R. My mods include the typical (race kit).

I performed the TPS reset many times and did the relearn thing, but same end result.

Next step I'm taking, since I still have the problem, is to look at the timing (only done statically).

RULE OF THUMB -- when you feel heat in the rocker boxes, you're good to go. takes longer in winter, but that means that the oil is circulating all the way to the top and is hence "warmed up."
luckily the front rocker box on the right side is easy to get to even from seated.
just save that right hand glove for last.
it's hard to put yer helmet on in the cold with that thick glove on anyway. : )

learned that from the HD old iron greybeards.

gotta love a twin!

Combat--its kind of wierd--it'll start every time and almost immediately chug to a halt. If I hold the throttle open just a hair, it'll run ok but if I let go before it runs for a minute or two, it'll stall again. I don't think its a intake leak but maybe i'll try shooting it with a little carb cleaner and see what I find. I'm still heading towards what cobradave said about the ecu reset. I know about the tps resetting but I'm not sure about the ecu reset? Maybe someone can shed some light on it especially if it'll help out a couple of us with our problems....Thanks for the suggestions,Steve

I'm pretty sure he would have meant the TPS reset.

I was mostly addressing 70gmc though : ).

If you have a question then start your own dang thread ;).

Buell4me,

I had a '05 City-X before my Uly. I put the race kit on it and had exactly the same issue. When I started that bike it had to be pointed out the driveway, start the engine, within 5 seconds put it in gear, keep it running with the RPMs as low as possible and ride immediately, very easy until it warmed up.

It would not idle or run right until it warmed up, where it ran great. If I tried to keep it idling sitting still, it would foul the plugs. TPS had been set and re-checked. It seemed to be a quirk in the race kit for that bike, when it was stock there was no issue.

I just learned to live with it once I learned how.

Etennuly,
Thanks--I'm beginning to see the light, I don't have a problem--I have a "Buellism".
In fact I road today, for the first time this season--new Pirelli Corsa III's and the newish race muffler--I still had to gently ease the throttle to keep it running cold but, boy, when I finally took off--WOW--I REALLY like this race muffler!!!! I think it has taken care of my off idle hesitation and the bog that I seem to hear so much about is a lot more livable then I was lead to believe---I think I'll just get used to the cold concern if it always ends up with the awesome warm running. Thanks again,Steve

No it jus does it when its first started. It doesnt do it when it is warmed up. If you shut it down after riding and gettin it warm then come out in like 5 mintues its just fine also. So i believe its just when the motor temp is down to the temp outside regardless of being 40 or 80.

I thought it was just the buell in it, but my 87 sporty doesnt do it. I was just asking people who have owned there buell longer. like i said i have only owned mine for 5 months. about 75 miles so far after its been so crappy out.

thanks for all the responses

lots of useful tips on here about letting it warm up...but how many of you guys let her cool down before shutting off?

letting temps, and electronics stabilize works both ways...

It's that the reasoning behind the fan staying on after you turn the key off...

I can see it now...

"Bike malfunctioning because I didn't allow it to cool properly before shutting it down"

If you just let it sit there running it'll get hotter.

70gmc... maybe an intake leak? Once everything warms up it seals?
