I think the answer to the original question is that there is a 10-12 hp differential between the two.

Aj06bolt12r,
bigger Q poster is available at my little website.
http://home.versateladsl.be/berthelsen/page5/page6 /page7/page7.html

Mind you, it's not a printer friendly format.

Just for the record, wear you full leathers when you try to follow me on my XB9SX conquering the twisty roads in the Belgian Ardennes...

... you can enjoy the sparkles form my food pegs while chasing in vain.

For some good reviews of the XB's and earlier Buells, read the article's in Motorcyle Online. Some good ones by John Burns, also a great comparison of the CityX against the Honda F4i and the Kawasaki 600 (the one designated as the 600R prior to 2003). The Buell won. ONe of their writers said the City X was the best Buell by a long shot.

I bought the 12R because I wanted the most power I could get in the package.

At the top of my wishlist is a CityX though, bottom line they are all very fun to ride.

My City-X would hit 130 any time I wanted, My Ulysses just kind of runs out of go at 120 or so. Gotta be in the ECM, timing, fuel maps, something. It flies to 110, then just kind of ooozes up from there, even without the bags.

But no matter, I only rode the City-X that fast because I could. The Uly becomes an aero-pig at 115 with the bags on it anyways.

I believe the Uly is less aero-efficient because the chassis is about three or more inches higher, and the bars are about six inches higher, placing the rider probably four to six inches higher and giving you more frontal mass than on a S.

I would venture a guess that BMC restricted top end on the Uly because of the ergonomic aero-inefficency. They didn't want their loyal customers blowing off the back of the things at speed, or developing uncontrollable high speed wobble from rider movement at speed.

berbert, I never said that I was faster on my 12 than u are on your 9, you are probably correct that I couldnt even keep up considering that ive never dragged my pegs in my life. ( accept for on the fat boy, lol) All im saying is that the 12r is in no way a straight highway bike, it was designed for the twisties and to be honest it kinda sucks on the freeway after about 30 min or so. I probably couldnt keep up with you but it wouldnt be because I was riding a 12 it would be because I couldnt keep up with you on any bike on the planet all though id love to try, Ive never been to the Belgian Ardennes. I would also venture to say that there are plenty of boys on the badweb that could give you a run for your money on thier 12r on any road you can find. But no matter really, id have to say we are splitting hairs by discussing this anyway. And thank you for the link to the Q poster! Happy buelling and b careful out there.

I've owned an XB9R and now own an XB12R. My observations:

A race kitted 9 is not too far behind a stock 12 - But still behind. (btw - a race kit transforms a 12 from a sleepy cruiser to a growling musclebike - a highly recommended mod!)

A race kitted 12 is WAAAY more punchy than a race-kitted 9.

People talk about the extra revs of the 9.... In reality, these extra revs come to nothing in the end as 9's powerband is from 5500-7500 (2000rpm wide) whereas the 12 is 4500-6800 (2300rpm wide).

Change the primary drive change and engine sprocket of the 12 to that of a 9 and the 12 will feel so much more muscly than a 9 that there is NO COMPARISON!

I don't know why anyone would buy a 9 over a 12. The 12 has the same weight and size but with more torque and power. What's not to like? (Sorry 9 owners....)

I have a 9. Love it and don't feel like I'm missing anything. I've ridden with R1's and Vrods and never felt insufficient during any type of SANE street riding. The 9 is cheaper initially and to insure. Can't really comment because I've never ridden a 12, but I would not replace my 9 for a 12 just because of hp at this time.
My NEXT bike.....who knows?

Fair enough. It's not like anyone NEEDs the extra power and torque. ;) It's like the 600 vs 1000 debates on Japanese Sportbike forums. Yes a 1000 is stronger everywhere -
but most people can't even ride a 600 to its limits.

I just prefer the XB12 because of the effortless 2nd gear power wheelies!

my "9" pulls strong from 3500 rpm to red line (compliments to the std. drummer & race kit) i have ridden a "12" on numerous occasions & my "9" is more "flickable" & more rev happy than the "12". also i seem to power slide the back wheel of the "12"more readily than the "9".(due to the more abbrupt lo -end power of the "12") so i'm saying that i find the power of my "9" to be more "user friendly " than the "12"

Personally, I feel that the 9 feels less agricultural and (relataively) more performance oriented. The 12 just has more flywheel effect, in my opinion.

But...now that I'm living at high altitude I'd take the extra power from the 12. Wheelies are a PITA on the 9 at high altitude, and forget about passing cars with a quick twist of the wrist on the freeway.

My XB9S with race kit has all the top end power I will ever use.-- And plenty of low end torque. - I can pull the steep hills here in southwest PA in 5th at 2000rpm.
And I weigh 250 lbs.

Splitting hairs, mm that sounds like fun.

The fact is, the 9er is less power full than the 12 and thus easy-going to ride at full throttle.
When the ocean freezes over some day, we could ride together Aj06bolt12r, side by side, even cruising on route 66 ... would be fun tough.

Helopilot, as you might already figured out, I am one of the old kids, at 43,8.
Hope you don't need to come over to Europe during your call of duty. Kaiserslautern is only enjoyable when you come as a tourist.

It's kind of warm for the time of year, 10°C, thats 50°F.
So thats fine for me, I do stop riding when temperature falls
bellow -10°C or 14°F. Or when hell freezes over
