okay bike is a 06 XB9SX less then 5 weeks old and has 1700 miles on it.

Problem

Turn the key to on position wait for engine light to go out before starting, just as it goes out it flashes, prettty fast about 12 times with in 2 or 3 seconds, followed by a pause then repeats. if I fire up the bike it keeps cycling. But if I shut off the bike and do it again sometimes it wont flash then I can fire it up with no flashing at all and ride it fine. It runs great with no indication of anything wrong.

So the chain of events that happen before this, was I went in for my 1000 mile service on saturday morning. it had never had a check engine light problem before this. I left the dealer ship and rode 50 miles and parked it for maybe 20 mins, turned the key and got the flashing light (before even starting the bike). I started it thinking it might go out, nope. so I shut it off and get the manual, turn the key on again. light goes out like normal. no flashing. So I go for ride. nothing for almost all day. until I stop for gas. and let the bike sit for about 15 mins and when I turn the key on it flashes. So I fire it up, then shut it down and try again and it goes out. so this happens through out the day. I make a conclusion that maybe the dealer over filled the oil level. I check its over filled. So I assumed that was the problem ( over fill lever switch?? does it exist?)

So this morning I syphon some fluid and checked and the light does not flash, cool. But again I stop for gas and after letting the bike sit for 10 mins it will flash when the key is put to the on. but a series of starts and stops and moving the bike a little too will make it eventually turnon without the light flashing.

So I get home finally today and check the oil level and its good (after a long ride) and turn the key on (bike sitting for 20 mins) and light still flashes. SO I find a Thread that tells you how to check the engine codes. I follow the procedure, jump the 1 and 2 terminal ( the uper and lower on the left looking at the connect with the tab up) and turn key on but light just goes out, does not flash anything. now I try it a few times with nothing. and fire it up for a few mins and try again. Now I cant bring up any codes or even get the light to flash again like before.

wow that was a lot of typing.

I also check all the fuses and most of the wires under the seat for anything loose or rubed or pinched. everything seamed fine.

So any ideas? I hate the dealer now and I really would like to avoid them if its something simple.

ohh one last thing, the dealer did wash the bike, and it did die on me when I fired it up after they were done, but I figure it was cause it was a little wet.

okay let the magic of the internet begin

Your solution is simple:

Take it to the dealer.
It's under warranty right?

Why screw with it at all?

It sounds like there might be a short between the wire 1 and 2 on the data link connector. The flashing sequence that you describe is an all clear/no trouble code read out or as the manual describes as intermission only. I would look at the connector and follow the wires back and examine for short to each other. There might be a place where they are mashed together.

OR........ pin 1 to ground. Because pin one is the Lt. GN/R wire and pin 2 is black wire (ground). The trouble code receive mode will initiate when the two are connected prior to the key and ignition being turned on. If the Lt. GN/R wire is shorted to ground anywhere it will trigger this mode. The mode will continue to flash the sequence until the connection is terminated with the key and ignition off.

Update

did a little riding today and some experiments, I noticed that if I turn the key on while I am off the bike it will blink, but If I turn it off and then just sit on it and turn the key, the light goes out normal. I even confirmed this by then getting of the bike, jiggling the seat upwards a bit and tried it again and the light blinked. So I imagine something has to be getting pinched and is only not pinched when I am sitting on it. I also will take a picture of my relay box as the three relays differ from the diagram on the cover.

anyone in Mass with one of the programs to read the computer??

Okay tried looking at everything under the seat without bolting anything with no luck. Also called the dealer, the tech said he has not heard of the check engine light flashing in the maner I described. he also said that he would be able to tell me in like 5 mins what the problem is IF I could bring it to him (portland Maine) so I might bring it to Everett HD/Buell this week because it closer to me, anyone have good experience their?

You mean the one in Revere?
Those monkeys don't do Buells anymore.

I would call first. I bought mine from them originally.
They used to be a really heavy buell dealer too.

So call first, there might be a human there that still knows some stuff.
Otherwise, I would suggest meridith or sheldons.

If the tech is not familiar with that flashing sequence then don't let them check the oil. Just my opinion.

The data link connector is under the seat on your model, I think. Regardless, the wires are under the seat. From your description of the problem I am confident that you have a short on the wire from pin 1 of the data link connector to ground. I am 99% sure! It should be easy to find. Look at the bottom of the seat and see where it is worn and look directly under that spot. You might rub some white chalk on the worn area and then install the seat, put some weight on it and check for a mark.
