I was riding the bike, when it began to sputter and hesitate badly. Accelerating from a stop made the bike bog down during acceleration. This happened for several miles. I was hoping it would make it home. Just before I made it home, the bike died at a stop sign. The low oil light came on, but I checked the oil and it was fine.
What gives?

Hmmm...Do you mean the check engine light?

I'll keep this short - I don't know.

Own a service manual? IF not shame on you! I suggest obtaining one and running through some checklists to isolate the problem, or if you ask nice enough I'll venture out to the garage to get mine.

Did the oil light come on before or after it shut off?

Will it restart?

DO you have ignition lights?

Check for codes?

I got a manual and I can interpret the codes for you.

I have an 03 xb9S. my ignition coil crapped out on me in the middle of a ride. It quit sending spark to the front cylinder. It sounds just like what you described.

I have the service manual and I used the self diagnostics. It gave an ignition coil code, so that tipped me off.

But because I tried starting it a few times, it blew a fuse, which I had to replace and then re-set something before I could get the check engine light to work. I dont remember, but a service manual would walk you through the entire thing.

i know this may sound odd but check your plugs. I new a guy that had a 97 Sporster and the back plug just straight stripped out and was hanging by the plug wire. Dont know if it was his fault for getting the wrong plugs or not tighting them down!!

Just a thought, other then that, im not sure!

I'll second that. Mine started running rough and idling on one cylinder after sitting for a week so I went to replace the plugs thinking it had fouled one. When I went to replace the front plug I found that it was loose as crap. I was removing it with my fingers! I'm glad I found it when I did since I was planning a mountain run on Sunday. Thank you mister technician that didn't feel it was an important job to get right. Anyway, check those plugs first and then go from there.
