Question - well, preface first.. Here in Ft. Lauderdale, when you're approaching A1A, which is the road that travels along the beach, you will see randomly placed temporary warning signs that say "MOTORCYCLES - loud exhuasts prohibited on beach, noise ordinances enforced" Where would one go to find out the exact local laws on this, and what the decibel level allowed actually is, and how, technically, the are allowed to measure the sound on your bike. I think most people here find it a joke as well as a discriminatory statement...as there are plenty of really loud motor vehicles cruising the beach. As of yet, I haven't seen any road blocks for this particular ordinance...but I'm guessing they would pull you over if they deemed you to be loud. |

I'm sure there are ten times more custom bike with S&S motors with straight pipes then loud buells in your area. I dont think you should worry. If you are in a sensitive area be careful not to go crazy |

Non the same location, but last year Thayer Street in RI, a popular hang out, started enforcing a noise ordinance for motorcycles. They just placed a few LEO's on the corners and sidewalks. If they thought the bike was too loud, they flagged you over and gave you a ticket. My buddy got one on his Fat Boy w/ straight pipes. I guess it is a discretionary thing. |

A automobile sound shop should possess a DB Microphone. Maybe ask them? |

Strait Pipes are ridiculous and an embarrassment. You don't need your bike to sound that loud for it to sound cool. |

Only people I ever heard about getting busted for sound were cruisers with straight pipes and novelty helmets, and IL4's with some really loud screechy pipe like all the squids have. I've never actually seen it happen, maybe I'm lucky? |

Angelwild327, check the Florida 316. statutes, they are very specific about those issues starting with every motor vehicle driven/ must be equipped with a muffler. There goes the straight pipe crowd. BTW, I saw the "look at me noisy guys" at the Cafe Blue Fish this weekend tempting fate, oh well. |

Angelwild327, I was hoping to run into you and your male (oh i'm not going there again) companion, my brother Jon took me to Cafe 27, Flossies, and Cagneys yikes! Had to sneak away to the beach in the few moments I had left. It was great to see all my old friends and a few new ones as well. I really miss the South Florida bike scene. |

Awww..well, Al..maybe we'll have to come visit you then...the "male" is gonna be in daytona in a couple weeks, and I'll try to get up for a weekend to visit, so let us know with a PM, how to find ya' and we'll at least get to meet up!!! OH..and after a bit of searching, I found this... there's a section on Motorcycles... if anyone wants to decipher it, have at it.. what I gather is that your bike can be no louder than what the specs from the manufacturer state, in their literature, the noise level is on the original production bike..or something http://www.dep.state.fl.us/legal/Rules/general/62-18.pdf |

Hey Angel.. Just glancing through it, bikes manufactured prior to July 1 '78 have an absolute limit of 102db - when tested by their set method. Bikes built after that date must conform (no matter what exhaust is on the bike) to sound limits given by the OEM for stock. So, whatever Buell says is the maximum volume of their muffler at red line is the limit of any and all replacement mufflers, including those supplied by the OEM. It does not state that the db rating must be on the vehicle (unless that's in another staute)however, all factories selling machines for street use in the State must be able to provide this information to the State upon request. If Buell can't provide this, then they are illegal for use in Florida (based on that regulation). Phew.. Ok, so Buell will tell Florida, if Florida asks them. They will test your bike if they feel you are out of compliance or overly loud. Additionally, they are allowed to do 'random' roadside tests to determine if a vehicle requires specific detailed testing. Translated - the first ticket is more or less at the discretion of the officer. After that, it's up to strict and controlled testing. |

Well, I'm gonna say "whew" for the OEM race kit...and I'm also betting that buell has the papers to provide... nonetheless, good to know the facts, eh? |
