The MC repair industry has an inherent problem.

Customers generally want to pay less to fix a MC than a car, as it is a toy to them and should be cheaper to maintain.

Therefore, motorcycle mechanics do not get paid nearly as much as automotive mechanics.

Therefore, good MC mechanics generally get sick of the low pay and go fix cars, not getting the many years of experience it takes to be a real master bike mechanic.

This is from my personal experience as a bike mechanic that got sick of the low pay and moved on.

Strange... the shop I take my car to charges $60.00 per hour for labor. The Harley dealer charges $85.00 per hour for labor. How does that translate into lower pay?

And FURTHERMORE, why should a motorcycle mechanic cost more? Think about it, an auto mechanic has to know the ins and outs of all makes forign and domestic. A Harley mechanic only needs to know about Harley engines. In fact a lot of Harley shops won't work on anything like an S&S or Revtech motor. So explain to me why they charge so damn much unless HD is trying only to cater to weekend warrior yuppie types with lots of disposable income?

& yet at MMI phoenix campus they boast abt michael jordan's AMA team calling up for their BEST 6 guys & paying tem handsomely.

another MMI anecdote, an american client of mine who raced dirt in states a few years ago told me of a buddy of his who gets 6 figures on the AMA circuit ..

either they are all full of shit, or there is GREAT disparity in reward.

tho i imagine AMA level work wld be hard, long, high pressured & instant burnout.

our local hd shop has only one or 2 bike mechs .. all else are car guys.

weekend outlaws .. ah MAN u gotta love them .. right up until u fry their asses on a backroad or see them trying the track!

capt .. too bad for y friend .. but w/ bosses like that! prolly better off w/a few pots down the pub.

It's not just HD dealers that have issues!!
I've noticed most dealerships are geared towards the selling of bikes rather than the maintaining of bikes. And it seems more and more lately everyone has forgot how to give good customer service.

MMI is like any school, it's up to you as to how much you get out of it. Also, it's up to you as to how hard you're willing to work to get to your career goal. Nothing will fall in your lap, no matter where you went to school.

Well they need to get serious about fixing and maintaining bikes, the prices are to the point where a bike costs as much as a car did 15 years ago. I can't afford to buy one every other model year. Every year the average price of a big bore goes up at least a couple hundred. Did you ever think that a 600cc bike would cost 7 to 9 thousand dollars?

glitch .. in the matrix ...

dude .. do u really think i am so naive as to think that if i can find the US$22k + US$40K (for personal living expenses - as req'd by us customs for foreign students) .. hence = US$62KKKKK, i will be farting around awaiting an arizona gold medal for brilliance in sitting on my arse & awaiting some great reward for just being there??!!

c'mon man.

*I* flew to MMI, made the calls, took the tour (cost me US$3000 for a week in arizona), JUST to chk out the school.

u make think i am goof due to my somewhat random & (humerous, to me at least) posts & lack of any REAL knowledge, but i ma going to school for ME .. NOT you.

perhaps i missed ur intent, but i am used to being wailed on, online, & i ain't taking it. be clear or consider yr *tone*.

when i finally get to MMI, be certain it will be to TOP the class & kick ass wherever i go ..

anyway .. if i misinterpreted u, ok, i was wrong .. but i think i was flipped the bird.

I'm sure you will.

No bird flipping.

I was simply saying that you get from school what you put in, and not to necessarily listen to all of a school's sales pitch, that's all.

that looks all angry in red ..
Don't sweat it.

Well at least you recognise how you are seen in other's eyes. If you want to be seen/read as serious, one must write that way.

But don't worry, I wasn't getting down on you at all. I think school is the way to go for anyone wanting to better themselves.

I went to AMI in 1990. I can tell you from experience that you are 100% correct. The spectrum ran from guys that learned theory well and were ready to get out there and learn on the job at a fast pace, to guys that didn't learn a thing and got fired from the job that the school got them.
