im thinking of getting one of those generic windscreens that bolt on your handlebars and are on longish "rods" to bring to front of bike. [similar to pic here: http://www.polywel.com/pictures/tview38.jpg ]
has anyone had any experience using these on the highway? does it make wind buffeting any more tolerable?

Try the Laminar Lip. I just got one for my XB9S, and like it so far.

The 3M dual locks attach to the front of the Buell flyscreen and to the rear of the Laminar Lip. The dual locks can be removed without any damage to the flyscreen...I removed it once to change the mounting location.

I've taken a few hwy trip and yes it does make a difference. It looks pretty good too.

Thanks 'cycleaddict' and 'Tpoppa' I have been looking for something like this for quite awhile and have been resisting the temptation to cobble something up.
This doesn't look like it is big enough to adversely affect mileage or performance. Have you found this to be true?
