Howdy all,

I have a (new to me) 2003 XB9R with 5500 miles on it. Unfortunately I have neither the owner's manual nor the service manual (I will put those on order posthaste). The bike is mostly stock, but it has a Jardine can on it. I bought this bike in the dead of winter and didn't get to ride it. Where should I start my inspection?

The tires are brand new- Scorpion Syncs (I specified those via input from this board). I have yet to adjust the suspension to my weight (the former owner was a...hefty fellow). Who makes a good tire pressure gauge?

The bike has the recall sidestand and orange bearings (also a recall item I understand). How do I properly inspect the drive belt? Is there a better drive belt available- is there a part number on the belt I should search for?

The next question is the Jardine Can. It looks like a good install, but are there potential trouble spots I should give the once over?

Finally fluids. The dipstick in the swingarm is bent over at an angle. I am guessing this is the way it should be. Still looks weird to me!

Thanks,
Cheesebeast

Get the HANDBOOK, Motors Manual, and Parts BOOK for your year/model so you start off on the right footing with your BUELL ...

They have the complete "INFO" you need ...

chancey move buying the bike without testing it. I dont have a Jardine, but I understand they need repacking after awhile.
There is an belt upgrade to the 2004 spec's. this includes the frn/rear sprockets. Check the vendors page for specifics. With the upgraded sprockets you can get the 2006 belt which i think.. has unlimited mileage life.

oh ya, the dipstick does tend to bend a bit..

Here's the tire gauge I bought (small new style):

Really good.

There is an upgraded belt for the 03' that you can get without doing an o4 conversion, not sure what the p/n is though. I'm sure Daves could help you out there. Much cheaper than doing a conversion. Once you get the service manual, I would do the 5000 mile service again myself.

Thanks all,

I just ordered a service manual from Dave S.

I will get a good tire gauge- thanks for the review.

I agree that it was risky buying without riding the beast, but I got a good deal on it. It was the Lone Buell of the Apocolypse at a local Harley dealership. It had sat in place for six months when I bought it at the end of January (in a snow storm).

Buell had pulled out of that dealership and I discovered I don't match the Harley demographic. The dealers were good to me, but they didn't understand why I was buying it. "You wouldn't rather have a Sportster?"

The guys at the Harley dealership reminded me of pirates all decked out in their Harley duds. All one of them needed was a parrot on his shoulder. "Awwwk! He wants a Buell!"

"You really not want to be seen on that wee Buell- ye be needing this here hog! Avast!"
