I DID ALL KINDS OF SEARCHES AND COULDNT FIND ANY PICS OF CUT OUTER AIRBOX COVERS FOR XB'S. IF ANYONE COULD HELP ME OUT, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECTIATE IT. I JUST NEED TO GET SOME IDEAS. THANKS ALOT. |

Chris....Is this what you are looking for? It's a 9 air box but you can do the same with a 12. |

WHEN YOU DRILL THE INNER AIRBOX COVER, YOU GET MORE AIRFLOW INTO THE THROTTLE BODY. IF YOU FORCE A WHOLE LOT MORE AIR INTO THE ENGINE, AND HAVE A TFI OR A PC3 TO TUNE IT, YOU SHOULD GAIN A FEW PONIES. THE THROTTLE RESPONSE WILL BE A LITTLE BETTER AS WELL. |

Pitcherman....It allows more cool air in the intake. As long as you have a high flow filter. The cheapest performance mod with the most gain would be to get the 12 inner air box 35 bucks or so (will fit on your 9), K&N high flow air filter and remove the snorkle in the frame. Of course a Special O.P.S. pipe to complete the package. |

No, Chris, I just searched too and can't find a damn thing...It wouldn't be hard though to make a cutout over the gas cap like the new '06's and cover it with some some gutter screen from the inside. (Message edited by kdan on September 22, 2005) |

That is the aluminum "Gutter Gaurd", I got it at Lowe'shardware. 6 sheets that are 6" wide and 3 feet long for $6.95. I used a dremel with a router attachment and a carbide bit. Remember to place tape over the area's you want to cut so the router attachment does not scuff the shine on your plastic. |

Does drilling the inner airbox cause the bike to run lean or does the onboard computer adjust to the change? Is there a noticeable difference in perfomance? Thanks |

Below 3000 RPM (or wherever it cuts over to closed loop) the ECM will adjust to the new airbox. Above 3000 RPM, the ECM just does what it was preprogrammed to do, and the mixture *could* lean out. That being said, I have a dyno run with fuel air plot from a 9sx with the completely cut airbox that shows nothing dangerously lean. |

I got one of the ebay carbon air box outers and painted it. It's not quite finished, but I like the results so far. I put on a 12 inner cover and cut openings to match the outer. I also blocked off the opening through the frame. I'll post dyno results when I get around to doing a run. |

Why did you block off the intake through the frame Brian? Don't you want the max amount of airflow? Maybe I'm thinking incorrectly, but I would think that for the most airflow you want the most available intakes. It does look really cool! How was the carbon fiber quality? |

I want the maximum amount of cool air. besides which blocking that hole allows more air to be forced over the rear cylinder. the openings in my outer cover are larger than the ones used by the 06 buells so I figure that I should be on the good side of things. The dyno tells all though, so I reserve final judgement until I compare numbers. |

Well Olin, in Brians defense, look at the 06 XB's. They no longer have the hole through the frame, but have vented covers instead. I did a little math/engineering investigation on my own about this for the same reasons. After calculating the approx area of the vent behind the filler cap, and the seam area all the way around the airbox cover to frame gap, I came out with approximately these dimensions: Vent plus gap on 06 XB lid; 6.35 square inches of opening Same gap along with opening in the frame de-snorkled; approx 13 square inches of opening Vent alone, if airbox was sealed to the frame; 3.95 square inches Throttle body area; 3.19 square inches. As you can see, any of these options will supply more air by square inches then the throttle body can accomidate. Though the argument will be posed that the openings other then the hole through the frame have a degree of restriction, I believe that is greatly offset by flowable area in all repects except a sealed to the frame air box with only the vent behind the filler. And seeing as that does not agsist, it is not truely an issue. I know that my butt dyno has not seen an enormouse gain in horsepower by any means, with the airbox eliminator kit from American Sport Bike, but the throttle responce or "crispness" is greatly improved. The bike on my last wide open pull into a head wind had no problems at the 135 mark other then shear buffeting, so I DO NOT beleive there to be ANY significant restriction. My frame hole is now actually plugged, and used as storage for my tire repair kit and inflator bottle. ( go ahead, say it, but you need to undo 4 screws to get to it! Right, but if you are repairing a tire puncture to get you home, you have the time to take it off, jeeze, it is only 4 screws!!) Just my .02 to chew on there..... Bruce |

Olinxb12r- feel free to do the same. Be ready for the intake noise rising straight into your helmet!(earplugs are a must on long trips) I still have 4 sheets of the aluminum left, but by the time I shipped it, you could buy it for the same $$. I plan on putting some under the seat vents, and on the chin spoiler, and in the cheese grator. I also found that throttle response was much quicker with this mod and an inner airbox mod. The improved sound waves may lend a hand into making it feel faster, as the intake noise is more like a gulping noise, then a constant growl above 3700. |

Kevin I knew I should have taken a picture of the setup before I re-installed it. In an attempt to minimize vibration and movement in the "pocket", I used the factory snorkle as the pocket. I found a 1 pint spray paint can lid that fit REAL snug in the bottom of the snorkle, flush with the bottom of the hole. Before pressing the cap all the way down, I used some Shoe Goo adhesive/sealant, put a bead around where the cap meets the snaorkle, then pushed it the rest of the way down. The Goo acts as a lubricate while pushing it down fortunately, as it was a very tight fit. Then when it dries, it is an adhesive to hold everything together. To test this system, I used 24 lug bolts from my VW collection, in a plastic bag, wrapped with tape that fit in the snorkel. Altogether, it weighs about 5 pounds, then went a 190 mile loop on some pretty ruff, twisty roads and no problems at all with the cap moving or popping out. I have no problems with believeing that this will last quite some time. If I get a chance before Octoberfast, I will remove the snorkel "pocket" and grab a few pictures for everyone! Bruce |
