I am off to see Dave in Appleton WI to pick up my Barricade Orange Uly! I plan to pick it up and my girl on Saturday and ride it across the country back to Seattle. I do have a planned stop at Beartooth Harley/Buell in Billings MT to get the servicing done.

I will provide a full report of my trip when I get back home next week. So, let me know what you all are interested in me reporting on.

A big thanks to Dave! He is wonderful to work with and thank you all for recommending him.

Congratulations on your purchase. Sounds like a severely cool trip. The more details the better.

I'd suggest that you should also post your story to the Adventure Rider site (www.advrider.com). There's been a LOT of interest in the Uly over there.

Do they know you're coming and do they know how to service Buells? I stopped by there in July. They had a single used Blast on display. Nothing else remotely Buell related in the place. Just FYI...

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.. .

Blackmojo casually wanders into Appleton Buell/H-D to check out the new Uly, has a 10min chat with Dave... ends up with a new bike AND decides to ride it across the country with his girl. (See, I told you Dave possesses Jedi Powers or something! hahaaa, the man has talent.) ; )

that rocks Blackmojo! echoing Jerry, ride safe and have a ton of FUN! definitely post up about the journey. love reading those stories from the road.

Thanks for all the support. I will be sure to provide as much detail as I can.

The servicing at Beartooth concerns me. I picked them for the distance from Daves to the tail end of the servicing window. When I spoke with them he had just received a Uly and he did mention that his shop had never serviced one before. I can understand that since no one probably has serviced a Uly. He did mention that they had serviced many XB12s.

I am looking to get a service done at 1k miles on the route I am traveling. That puts me in WY or MT. I am indifferent to where since the miles are all close together. However, I would be interested in any recomendations of where to get it done. Beartooth said it takes 3-5 hours to complete. By the way, did you see all of the Buell dealers in WY? It seems like every Harley shop is a Buell shop also.

Two more days to go!

There's not going to be a difference in what is done to the Uly and the XB12s. Same engine, essentially same tranny, typical 1000 service. Don't sweat it. Different model, same platform. Time? A bit long. Oils and a looking over will not take that long.

Blackmojo,
Seems like the most likely place for a snag with the servicing is the new transmission oil. I can easily imagine that a dealer would have the new bikes and NOT have the new oil. Do they change trans lube at the 1k service?

Whodom,
What new transmission oil? Are you talking the "new" Harley synthetic?

Thomas,
There's a few gravel roads to get lost on as you head over the Rockies, or just take the Highway To The Sun and snap a few pics at the summit. I've never taken the opportunity to ride that road, but have heard it's nice if you do it mid-week and avoid the motorhome cavalcade.

Have a good ride.

The Uly didn't appeal to me at all when it was introduced, but I find myself being drawn to it more than any other XB. Crap..., I just got out of debt.

Regarding the transmission Oil... I believe Dave will look into if it is different or standard harley. If it is different, I'll take a qrt or two with me.

Thanks for the trip tip Mike. I'll try to plan it in the itinerary.

The funny thing about the Uly DJ, is that it was never on my list when I began shopping. In fact, I never heard of Buell until I was doing research on the BMW GS. Many hours of test riding later... the rest is history.

MikeJ & Blackmojo,
The Cycle World article specifically says that the new clutch on the 06 XB's with reduced pull effort required a new less-slippery lubricant so that lighter springs could be used in the clutch. The new dog ring transmission may have different lube requirements as well. I can well imagine you would run into problems if you dumped the standard HD tranny lube or Syn 3 into the primary on one of the new bikes, and a non-Buell-friendly dealer would be just the type to do this.

Only shows the Syn3 and SportTrans fluids for the tranny, says nothing that I can find about a new fluid or requirement. Might be good for folks to know if there is a new lubricant for the new clutches. I wonder what it says in the owner's manual or service manual for the new models.

Daves? If you're reading this, is there a new clutch lubricant for the Ulysses?

Wait, just noticed this one:

Is this the "new" stuff? And would this be better in an "older" tuber as well?

vs vs SportTrans?

If you go through Gillette WY make sure you stop in there, it is a Buell freindly shop, have the owner show you his flat track bike with the XB motor in it.

MikeJ,
That's evidently the stuff for the new transmissions. Here's an excerpt from one of the Uly press releases at buell.com:

NEW TRANSMISSION: A new transmission design offers improved shift quality, reduced noise and extended service intervals. This transmission replaces moving/sliding gears with thin steel “dog rings” that slide to effect gear changes, a design commonly used in automotive racing gear boxes. Shifting is quicker because the dog rings have less mass than gears. New helical-cut gears are smoother and quieter than straight-cut gears. The new transmission enables reduced clutch effort. New Formula + Oil extends the service intervals for the primary/transmission lubricant to 10,000 miles.

Of course with a 10k recommended change interval, I'll bet they won't bother it at the 1k service.

If Cycle World was telling the truth about the properties of the new lube, seems like it would make the clutch in a older bike really grabby. Then again, the page specifically says it can be used in all Harley transmissions including XL's. Oh boy, now we have another lubricant to add to the "best oil for my Buell" transmission debate....

Then again, changing the xmmission oil at 1,000 miles is for removing metal shavings/filings. Probably still need to do it.

Thanks for the input. I called Buell customer service and the nice gal did some research for me. They are recommending the Formula + lubricant to be changed at 1K, 10k and 20k miles. Thanks for the help MikeJ.

Unfortunately, Jeremyh I will be quite a bit north of you. I also will be North of Gillet traveling on 94.

I am hoping to get some rain in Green Bay. I have some new gear I want to try out, not to mention the bags. The forecast is nice weather for the entire trip.

It is used in the HDs as well so most shops will have it.
Just make sure the tech doing the service knows.

Dave... are the clutch springs any different?

Could us older owners buy new springs and new fluids and rebuild the clutch pack and get the same new lighter clutch pull?

Last night after work I led Tom and Pam as far as Madison. I bought them dinner and then went our own ways. Me, home to Iowa. Them off towards WA.
He said he would keep us updated as they ride across the country.

He did get an extra bonus yesterday. He had about 3 hours to kill before Pam's flight arrived.
He had just mentioned that he is a Packers fan when our very own "Packer connection" Lake Bueller stopped in to ride a ULY.
Lake took him on the Buell riders tour of the stadium.
Tom was thrilled, thanks Lake!

Well, this may be too late then, but Beartooth is my 'local' dealer, meaning 150 miles away. I could mention that they do sell alot of Buells, they are common around here, which is probably the reason chainsaw saw only a Blast in the showroom. I would say the sign of a bad dealer is one that has several of them in the corner gathering dust, not one that's sold out.

I don't know how good their service is, as they won't work on my bike, nothing pre-Evo is their policy. I have to do it myself. But if I can finangle a new Lightning Long that's where I will have to go for service, so Mojo, if you check back after your ride, tell me how the service was.

At the Colorado BRAG event, Erik Buell said that we could replace the clutch spring(s) and use the new fluid for the same reduced effort (XBs only).
Of course the shifting won't be the same as the new tranny.
He also said the lubrication engineer that formulated the new fluid made it both more slippery for the gears and grippier in the clutch. No change in clutch friction material.

Following this post has me all fired up.........as I am doing the same thing this week. I fly into Wisconsin from Baltimore on Thursday to get my Uly and then of course ride her home. I can't wait.

DaveS,
I will be camping Thursday night at a campground in a town called Belmont in the Southwest corner of Wisconsin. (meeting up with some friends) Can you suggest any decent backroads to get me from your shop to Belmont?

Thanks

Lots of good roads down that way.

Quick note on the service.

All fluids are changed at the 1k service (engine, pri/trans), and then are replaced. A 1k service shouldnt take any longer than 2 hours. If they charge you more than that, they are ripping you off.
