I am sick of spend $60 dollars every four months for the damm thing (if you have not guessed yet it just went out AGAIN). How is it possible to design such a wonderfull machine with such a crappy piece of electronics?

Why do I have to pay for it over and over again? This really seems like an item that should be nearly free as it is obviously a piece of crap.

My bike is out of warrenty with 13,000 miles on it and I am looking at buying a third sensor. Actually I take that back I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER SPEED SENSOR!!!!!!!! I may just epoxy it to the door one night of my local unfit to be a dealer, dealer.

Has anybody tried to fix their sensor? Can it be cut open and fixed? If not I would love to hear some sugestions on the best epoxy to use on glass doors.......

Dave, Sorry but your post left me a little confused. Would you please elaborate?

Kenny, yes the speedometer. Dead again. Had a chp on my tail, knew it and still got pulled over for 15mph over. Lucky me no ticket.

BTW as much as I dislike Quaid Harley in Loma Linda I would not really glue it to their door. I just don't buy anything from them anymore.

when i shift from first to second and flog the throtle my speedometer will read 20mph then bounce to 50-60 mph, and continue to bounce around at higher speeds,bike only has 2900 miles on it. im going to take in to dealer when i get a chance.

Kenny my bike had 2,400 miles on it when the sensor went out. I am no tech so I really can't tell you if thats the problem although each time mine has gone out it went from working to totally dead.

I believe DAve was referring to an updated kit that is supposed to fix the speedo sensor once and for all.

How many old style speedo sensors did your dealer sell you, and over what time frame? The part was superseeded a year or more ago, and it should have solved the problem. If your dealer kept selling you old parts after the updated part was available, somebody has some explaining to do...

The new part wires into the ECM 5v regulated power feed. You can use the old part and the old wiring setup if you add your own regulator. I have schematics here on the site, and if you want an adventure I bet you can find a universal cell phone charger (5v output) at wal-mart for $10 or less that would work well also (if you packaged it into a waterproof enclosure and wired it in to the supply leads).

This is an easily solved problem...

Kenny, pull the sensor and clean the metal shavings off it (it has a strong magnet in it). Might not help, but might.

The can act weird for a short period of time, but they usually just completely die all at once.

Reepicheep - Were all the 03 speed sensors bad, was it just some or did some have the upgraded part installed?

I have an 03 XB9R I bought used in Feb with 1800 miles. It now has 8129 miles. Speed sensor works fine. Do you know why some go bad real quick and others are still chugging along?

Reepicheep, yes the dealer kept (and I suspect would continue) selling me the stock piece. I will order a new one from daves next week and may bug you at that time for the wiring schematic. Thanks

I laid my bike down a few mounths ago and now every once in awhile the spedo and tach will freze up or not work at all. Any ideas on what to look at would be appreciated. Thanks

All the tubers and the blasts potentially had the problem. The 03 XB9R's also potentially have the problem. All the XB9S models do NOT have the problem, it was fixed about the time they were released. I am not sure when the fix crept into the XBR models, but it got there eventually.

The problem (as I have come to understand it) is that the little hall effect semiconductor sensor is highly sensitive to overvoltage conditions, and will blow easily. It can work fine on only 5 volts, and is rated for a normal overating voltage of anything from 5 to 15V. I don't know what voltage is the "instant death".

Some bikes seem to have a lot of "noise" on the supply line for that speedo sensor. Others don't. Perhaps a grounding issue, but my Cyclone was one of the problem ones, and aside from continually eating speedo sensors, the bike never had any other electrical problems.

There are pictures here from a nice portable scope showing the spikes, and showing the filter works to remove them.

Schematics are posted here, they are very simple and I spec'd them to match what your local radio shack probably has in stock, but in hindsight I think there is an easier way now...

Go to Wal-Mart or Target or whatever, and get any of the "cell phone car chargers" that are rated for 5V. I think the old Nokia phones all used this voltage. You can probably get one for around $10, which is less then you might pay for just parts at Radio Shack. Disect the thing, and take the important bits, and package them to be waterproof, and just wire it into the new harness.

Or get the kit from DaveS, he will get you set up. I am not sure if you need the new part, and the new wiring kit, or if it is all just part of the updated unit. When DaveS tells you, post it here so we have it on record.

If your local dealer still has the old style, and will just give you one free based on the fact that they kept selling you superseeded parts, the regulator will protect it fine.

There are probably 20 or 30 people here running the regulators I was building... and if they failed they were all polite enough not to tell me : )

Scooby, the fact that both do it suggests some problem with the wiring harness going to the instrument cluster. I would look for (in this order) connector problems, frayed insulation, or internally broken wires (the insulation is solid, but the wire inside is broken).
