Just got a Puralator oil filter, but it has a spring valve.
Will this create too much pressure for the oil pump?

The spring valve is a pressure release so that you don't blow the seal or rip a hole in the side of the filter on cold start up when the oil is the thickest and pressure the highest.

The valve allows the oil to bypass the filter like Wycked says when the oil is cold and thick OR if the filter gets plugged by some mishap, so that you don't starve the bearings for oil. Dirty oil is much better than no oil at all.

The only question is which Purolator filter did you get? The bypass valve spring pressure varies from filter to filter so it's possible to get a filter that fits, but which has a spring pressure lower or higher than optimal. I don't know the proper number for an XB.

Purolator filters definitely appear to be well-made based on the photos on the oil filter comparison webpage that's been around for several years.
