Rode to church this morning, bike fired right up, about a two mile ride, did a couple wheelies, having a good time. After church bike was dead. Clicked once or twice and that was it. Bump started it, wondering what had happened, did another wheelie out of the parking lot, went a quarter mile and it just died again. I tried to start it as I coasted to a stop, but electrically it was totally dead. Tach was stuck at 2500.

I searched archives because I'm sure I have read about this, but didn't find it. RTFM and I didn't find a relevant troubleshooting page for "totally dead" other than dead battery. I suppose my alternator just crapped out, any other ideas that might be more simple? The bike sits a lot in the spring because of my work, but if it was just a battery it shouldn't have died after the bump start right?

Disconnect the stator, charge up the battery, start the engine, and measure the AC voltage between the pins coming from the stator (engine) side, and get back to us.

I noticed you said disconnect the stator before charge up the battery - is that intentional? I am charging the battery now in the bike, with stator still connected. Does a bad stator cause a drain when bike is sitting?

Does a bad stator cause a drain when bike is sitting?

no

only a connected battery does

disconect the neg batt cable to

eliminate any extra draw

Its a pretty cool church. I think if I crashed into someone's car in the church parking lot it would have been a party foul, but harmless wheelies of joy are okay

That's it, god's hand smiting you for raising hell on the way to church!

Sure sounds like stator / voltage regulator to me. How many miles on the bike, and do you have any aftermarket electrical stuff hooked up to your bike?
