Did you polish the pipes first with something else and put the final shine on with the mag polish? Or just set in on them with that polish and a rag?

I got mine cleaned up nice with some scotchbrite and very fine rubbing compound, but they still don't look as good as yours.

Good pic.

Thanks,
Bill

Xring that polish is it.Secret is to do it many times for awhile. You'll soon rub those stainless swirls out of the pipe within about 4 or 5 applications. Then you'll maybe have to do it once a month after that. The whole pipe now takes me less then 5 minutes at best.Apply your polishes with paper towel and rub it in till it turns black. Then buff it to a shine with a soft piece of terry cloth.Repeat as nesasary. The secret is in the paper towel its abrasive enough to help the polishing process. The pic doesn't do justice. Its actually shiner.

No kidding that stuff is great! I noticed the deep deep rich luster on Fiery's bike I think it was and commented on it. Dana says casually (while still looking deeply troubled, lost, and depressed for want of his dear Naughty), "I just polished those for the first time a few days ago, it's easy, only took five minutes or so to do. You oughta try this polish..." Then he let out a protracted half-hearted sigh and slumped back down sidesaddle on his bike.

BadWeB rocks. Thanks Dana!

This may be a stupid question, but won't the pipes rust? I know that stainless steel doesnt rust, but I'm not sure if that stainless steel is a coating and could be rubbed off.

Are those stock pipes shinned up, or ceramic coted shinned?

That is just the effect of that polish. Amazing stuff.

Daman,
Dude, even stainless steel (SS) will show signs of oxidation/discoloration if left to the elements and high heat without care. Before I wrapped my header I would simply take a scotch bright pad to it. At first I was disappointed to see the golden finish turn to white steel color. After I road it, the golden tone returned along with the way cool blues and purples up near the cylinder head.

Rest assured that the XB header pipes are 100% solid stainless steel.

BadS1 - I'd also like to know if that is the stock header in your picture. And did you only use the Eagle to get it silver and shiny like that?

Thanks.

Only Eagle one.Yes its the factory header. No they aren't Ceramic coated.Remember use paper towel for applying and rubbing it in then polish with soft terry cloth. You guys that have pipes that haven't been done before it take just alittle more elbow grease but it will prevail.Paper towel is the secret, don't use it and you don't get the same results.Oh and BTW the blueing takes a long time before it returns but the gold return very nice.

Maybe a little, but all the while realizing that he would be having so much more fun with you there too. Of course all of us felt that way. We all missed you. : ) Especially when Dana kept on and on about polishing his pipe, and how good it looked, and how it only took him five minutes once a month with a piece of paper towel... I better stop there. crazy

But back on topic... what I really like about that polish and the finish it leaves is that it isn't super-shiny mirror finish, but more of a deep satiny luster. I just plain like the way it looks better than fully mirror-finish polished stuff and it also is much more forgiving wrt finger prints and stuff like that.

I sure do respect the effort required to maintain a mirror polished finish on a motorcycle though, especially on aluminum parts. Guys who make the effort to maintain polished aluminum garner some serious karma/introspection time for themselves. That can be very therapeutic. Hmmmm... maybe I should try it. :/

daman -- the pipes are 100% "stainless steel"

quotes due to the fact that there is no such thing as stainless steel -- any steel will oxidize given enough time in the right (wrong) environment --

rest assured, though, that polishing your headers won't cause them to rust, and, unless you are running in salt water alot, your headers won't rust
