I have an early XB9R, SN 1340, and am wondering what differnce there might be between the first couple of thousand bikes and the rest of production.

Two things I am aware of are the sidestand, mine does not have the R stamped in it as it is prior to the recall bikes, and the caps on the forks are less shiny than the later bikes.

Anyone have better knowledge of this than I?

The bearing seals in the rims should be orange and are warranteed under a recall if there black.

The bearings. The black sealed bearings were recalled (or maybe is was termed a mandatory performance upgrade?) and the new ones have a red dust seal.

I've got 1341 and the bearings and side stand are all that I'm aware of. That's compared to the other '03s.

Oh yeah, the speedo sensor will eventually die on you. Mine went out at 13,400 miles just last Saturday.

Mine went last fall. Geofg, where are you? I bought mine form Uke's in Kenosha wonder how far the next bike down the line went?

The drive belt on the 03' XB9R is different than other bikes built after 03'. Later bikes have a stronger belt and different pulleys. I've seen a conversion kit on AmericanSportBike.com

You will also want to update the Airbox cover. There is a later model cover that has a dimple in the middle of the air cleaner and helps with air flow.

I'm down in FL. Mine was the second XB to arrive at Gainesville HD. The first sold to some Joe down in Tampa.

I upgraded the belt on mine '03 XB9S and am quite happy with the results.

If you do the upgrade, consider using the kit we sell here. We use the Diamond highlight sprocket instead of the stock one. Might as well get a cosmetic upgrade at the same time as the functional one. Note, the guards aren't included, because many options exist, CF, polished, billet, etc. But we have those too. It is a worthy upgrade, if nothing else just because of how easy it makes a rear wheel removal. If you don't do the upgrade, DON'T cheat the process in the manual for rear wheel removal or you WILL be buying one of our kits afterall.

I believe there was a replacement belt for the 03's that held up better. My belt lasted to 20K and my speedo sensor died at 18K.

I kept the speedo sensor as I believe that the insulation on one of the wires wore through. That is a tight fit down there and am surprised that there is not more shorting going on.
