Has anyone ever tried contacting a former Buell dealer to try to find out if factory recalls have been completed on a specific bike?

I presume the info could be obtained from the NTSB web site by paying a research fee, but am wondering if there is a cheaper and easier way.

Take it to any HD shop. They will run the VIN and let you know.

You can also do it yourself ......easily......online ..on the Harley-Davidson website.

Be mindful that while recalls don't, per se, "expire" that they also don't exist in perpetuity. .

When I was working parts at an HD dealer, the Service Writer said there are basically 2 kinds of recalls.
A Product Campaign is to fix an annoying issue and has a finite time limit.
An example would be 1125 recall #0505 which was a map reflash.

A Safety Campaign, like #0838 front brake line recall supposedly never expires.

Of course, that was while Buell still existed.......

Thanks guys, I was able to check it on Harley's web site.

I also found that the NHTSA web site has a VIN check function as well, but it didn't work for me. Could possibly have been because I copied/pasted the serial number from another page, or not.

It shows two closed safety recalls, one for the front brake line, and one for the tranny fifth gear oil jet.

I am assuming that if an applicable recall hadn't been completed on that serial number, it would show as open.

FYI all buells recommend updates arnt necessarily, necessary. Charging harness upgrade causes, undercharging in slow traffic. The cali canister, isn't all that. The front brake line re-route, is necessary by the dealer or yourself (easy fix). I'm sure there is more, but mostly no real fix for anything, just a whole bunch of bandaids

^^^ I'm talking about mandatory safety recalls, not recommended updates.

I already knew which ones applied to the bike, was looking for a way to make sure they were applied.

online ..on the Harley-Davidson website is the easiest way. Also, any HD dealer can run it for you.

I think the point folks were trying to make was that if you've got, safety recall (and, for the record there is only one kind . . which you can search on the NHTSA database) you may be challenged to get it performed 18 years hence.

They do not have a determinate lifespan . . they have a practical lifespan in that some of the parts simply no longer exist.
