Y0539.1AMA Buell 1125R, CR starter gear 53T After seeing how the starting system works, I think changing out all three items (sprag, housing, gear) is a good idea. The sprag bearings ride on the starter gear hat. My measurement shows no difference in OD of the hat in old vs. new, but the surface finish surely show signs of wear and marring. If even a little bit of slip is allowed by the starter gear's surface finish while the sprag bearings are being driven by the starter motor, the sudden release and catch the bearings undergo could surely damage them over time. Old starter gear bearing surface OD: 51.74 mm http://i.imgur.com/L8932Ww.jpg New starter gear bearing surface OD: 51.73 mm (0.01 mm more narrow than the old one) http://i.imgur.com/QRpQi0Fh.jpg New vs. old starter gear bearing surface finish http://i.imgur.com/GcaHqsA.jpg On the other side, the sprag housing/race the bearings ride within could also be slightly damaged internally, not allowing the bearings to ramp up and catch fully, binding up, and transferring force to the starter gear hat. And the srag bearings ... well, they're pretty obvious. http://i.imgur.com/OZOM80Th.jpg edit: fixed image links (Message edited by jeepinbueller on October 06, 2015) |

I'll pull mine apart and see what it looks like first before I order the starter gear. Good pics though, thanks. |

That looks like my sprage clutch if your starter has been acting up almost like a battery going bad. Not turn over and start to turn over and make all kinds of bad noises it could be to late for the 3 parts of the clutch. Part# Gear 53t Y0539.1AMA, Housing sprage clutch Y0537.1AM, Clutch sprag Y0536.1AM, Gasket R0008.1AM, Nut CD0032.1AM. Stop riding when it does any thing like that you might save $200 on two of the parts. This is sprage #4 in 45K a lot of short 2 mile trips. |
