I was under the impression that with "cloth" gaskets you don't oil them when you replace them. Some "old biker" friends of mine said I should. I was under the impression you only do that if they are rubber gaskets. I'm referring to the new stator gasket I got in.

No oil on mine, and is has not leaked in thousands of miles since I replaced it.

Yeah I was 99% sure that was crap but I didn't want to take the chance. Thanks.

You oil rubber gaskets so that they they don't stick or bind while you install them. You don't have to oil cloth or paper gaskets, but there's no harm in doing it. I'll use a dab of axle grease on mine because it has just enough tack to hold the gasket in place while you line up the parts and get the screws started.

In the old days the hot rodder's would soak their header gaskets in water. the idea was to make them swell up so when you installed the extra thickness would fill in any voids between surfaces.

I have no idea, crap or craptastic?

I race vintage stuff...getting gaskets is a PIA ...I've posted this before...lightly coat the gasket with "thread anti-seize" (like the stuff you find in the little pouches at the check out at the auto parts store) the gaskets will seal and also won't stick ( and tear) next time you have to visit inside the engine...hope this helps

I lucked out a whole lot. I put a little oil on the case and the gasket stuck pretty well and then right when I was getting frustrated, because the gasket would fall off when I would try and over come the magnetic forces, but just then is slipped on with ease and I threaded some of the bolts. All is now right with the world. Except my battery light came on the other day while riding. I'm going to have to check voltage. 7 days until the dragon!!!!
