Does anyone else have the issue of hands going numb on the R? Doesnt always happen, but hate it when it does. Never had the problem on any other bike I have had in the past. Open to suggestions on grips and experiences with them.

Hands going numb is usually an indication of either gripping the bars too tight, or you are leaning too far forward / supporting your upper body with your arms instead of your core.

While raised bars and different grips may help a bit, but usually it can be simply fixed by positioning yourself differently.

Froggy; I have spindylolithesis, so the only way I can ride, is with my weight centered. I always use a two finger float (learned from Nick Ienatsch) on the brake and clutch lever, so cannot grip the bar too tightly (ride in traffic alot). Just never have encountered this before. Brumbear, I weigh a massive 160. No problems there! LOL!

I have had it happen and loosened my gloves up and it went away. Felt pretty dumb.

Been wearing the same gear for years and the bike for about half as long. I have tried several different things, so I guess the process of elimination is still in process. I would feel pretty braindead if all it was in reality that I was wearing my gloves too tight! No offense Rhard. It would be one of those lightbulb moments like I am sure it was for you. Thanks for the input.

What are some of the other bikes you rode? Any comfort/ergonomic modifications to them?

I had to look up the condition you have, it does not sound fun.

Froggy; I have owned and ridden a number of bikes, never had any issues. The other bike I rode recently beside the Buell was an FZ1. I just sold that in fact. Positioned differently albeit, but still I was able to ride with no discomfort and more load was on my L5 than with the Buell. I have found a number of modalities that I can alleviate the pain with and have never had this issue before. This is the only area that I have this with. I work on heavy equipment and am not bothered doing that, so will continue moving forward in trying to figure out whats going on. Your right, it is not a "fun" condition. Injury at some point in my life caused it. Probably climbing some goofy tree or something...

From changing my seat my comfort level has went form 5 to an 8. I've noticed a big difference, not so much a hump in the middle of the seat and a little less strain around the the legs. I'm not sure, but maybe even get the lowering pegs might help a little as well. Just my 2¢ in a 300$ question!

I have back issues too, and I have hard of people getting relief from chiropractors. It's a neck issue caused by the shoulder position while riding. Just a thought.

You could adjust your throttle return, if there's too much pressure pulling back....

If it's vibes causing it, on "normal" bikes a heavier bar end weight is reccomended, I notice the 1125 has no wieghts at all, just that little plastic cap.

Is there a reason for the cap, and is there an end weight alternative for these bikes? I've been meaning to bring it up as well.

I have a problem with numbness in my right hand only on the 1125r after extended periods of steady throttle. I believe it is from the heavy throttle that the bike has and the amount of pressure it takes to hold the throttle open.

makes sense my hand goes numb too i think its because I'm so out of shape going to try to support my upper body with my core. then I'm sure my stomach muscles will be sore!

Lead shot in a suitably sized shrink wrap or similar rubber tube, sealed with cable ties at each end and inserted in the bars, people have been doing this for a long time to cure this problem, one of the first and best things I did to my "R", simple, cheap and it really works.

Sir_wadsalot; Been to chiropractors, many of them. Even got spinal decompression therapy, which is amazing. Hope to continue that, but its not available in my area, so would have to move. I am not in as good of shape as I was, too much working on my house, so that does affect it. However my core is still pretty good as you can see my six pack (not cans : ))I used to workout 3-4 times a week, but have not been able to do that for some time. Still I believe that there is something else to this. You may have something with the bar ends. Azxb9r has a point about the throttle. I have ordered myself up one of those little special inserts for the R throttle from Thomas Pfeffer to see what that might do. I know it shortens the throw, so maybe it might have secondary benefits. It was 25.00, so wont be out anything if it doesnt alleviate it. I do have a Corbin seat that was given to me, brand new, so thought about putting that on and seeing if that makes a difference.

My right hand goes numb quite often while riding my R, though I'm sure part of my problem is a mild case of carpel-tunnel.

I just put a new set of grips on (came free with my shorty-levers) that are a knockoff set of Driven D3's, and I'm curious to see what affect is has for me. Been too hot out to want to ride.

In my experience, numb hands is usually the result of undesirable shoulder positioning. Pinching a nerve in the shoulder or having the arm in just the wrong location for an extended period will cause the numbness.

Numb hands, ironically, has zero to do with the hands themselves usually.

Rat is right. I complained for years then talked to a physiologist or whatever you call an occupational health doctor. She said that it's all in the shoulders.

Talking with Thomas Pfeffer at http://www.pform-pfeffer.de/ he carries the Buell Traction grips and said that he has had good success when others who have had the same issue have purchased them. Considering that option as well. Anyone ever use these? To me, seems worth a try. Rat has a point and I know that due to my occupation the proverbial "knots" in muscles in the shoulders will pinch blood supply and exacerbate a problematic area. Since all nerve endings end/channel through the spine, it very well could be originating their. I dont really care for the stock grips and plan on changing them anyway. The bar end weight was recommended to me by an old Beemer rider. He said that helped him. It was mentioned in this post by Nuts4mc and Stimbrell as well. Seems logical. Lots of good info from everyone in this post.

from my SV days... trying to get a grip on the tank to help relieve some of the force going into the arms and shoulders while heavy front wheel braking...since the 1125 was a lot faster than my old SV...I got this from Al's shop right away...it may help you too...but you have to be "conditioned" of gripping the tank/frame with the knees for it to help.

if your hands are on the large side try road bicycle bar tape over existing grips, nice and cushy. make sure its installed properly though. helped some for me, but I mostly try to think of riding no hands on longer trips.

Try http://www.vibranator.com/ You sound a lot like me sometimes I ride 10 miles my hands start to go numb sometimes ride all day no problem. They helped me a lot. They are not $20 or $30 kind more like $122 two yrs. ago. They are tuned for your bike. I would buy them again even though its hurts the wallet a lot.

I have been using spider grips for years. I just put their Peak grip on my R and would recommend them. They are very soft and wear quickly I would go throught 2-3 sets a season of the slt's on my race quad don't know about the r yet but I would say 1 set a year at less than $20 I don't mind changing them I think there worth it

Nuts; been thinking about that for some time. Saw some on a CBR recently and was wondering. Mako, my hands run a medium, so not sure that would work. Worth a thought. Dennis; Thats exactly what I experience. I looked that site up. Like that idea. Shows the cost for the R at 102.00, so it is doable. I have bar end mirrors, so would have to think of something else so see traffic. Dont like the stock mirrors too much.

Use RTV black around the mirrors on the 1125R or CR it makes it about 30% better you can see a little then. Don't forget to tape up the black plastic and the mirror and set them where you want them you cant move them later unless you cut it out. I know this is about your hands I thought this might help someone out.

I surprised this got so many hits, good info everyone!

The problem with supporting your core on the frank, is that if your shoulder/hand/hip ergo triangle is just so, your shoulders are just stuck in the position to cause the nerve pinch or neck pressure or whatever....it's not too much weight forward, it's literally just how the shoulders sit...still, I like the lead shot idea, and the vibranator thing looks fantastic!

My hands are fairly beat up and have problems with my throttle hand going numb. A cramp buster throttle paddle pretty much fixed the problem on my street bikes. Waiting to try it on my 1125R track bike. Don't think I will put it on till after tech.
