If the oil light doesn't come on under hard braking, don't bother checking the oil. I seriously NEVER check mine.

I keep this in my riding jacket pocket and check my oil every other tank full of gas. You dont need to be on the bike and its easy to put the dipstick in. I sqwat next to the bike holding the handlebar with my right hand and check the level with my left. Left knee on the ground, right into the case to help stabalize.
