Just wondering if anyone's put some slightly taller bars on their CR. I.E.- taller than the accessory bars, maybe something like the ones on an XB12S or XB9SX. And before somebody does a photoshop, I'm NOT talking ape hangers.

I'm trying to get used to the stance, but it sure seems like I'd be more comfortable riding the bike with taller/wider bars. I'm physically comfortable with the accessory bars, I just feel like I would be more comfortable controlling the bike with taller bars. I guess coming from the Uly riding position is a fairly big adjustment for me.

Have you changed to uly pegs yet? I do that first before looking for even taller bars.

My feet/knees are fine; I don't think the Uly footpegs would help.

The chrome bar from the XBS does not have any further rise than the high bar for the 1125CR.

Uly bar? Closest to a buell ape hanger you can get.

Wondered about that when i sat on a cr at ocala. Clubmans are sweet looking but would be quite painful for me.

Put some clubmans on your Uly and you will get used to the excessive uprightness on the CR fast!

Chris- the Ss bars appear to be quite a bit taller.

Hugh,

I can't comment. I only have the chrome bar in my possession.

Glad you qualified that upfront ... That will save me time adding some ape hangars via PhotoShop. I'm not that good with it anyway!

If you enjoy the rotax engine and wish for a suspension will better travel, higher handle bars, and the ability to carry luggage, I strongly recommend the Aprilia CapoNord. It has to be on of the most underrated bikes. I sure hope my 1125cr runs as smooth as the Capo once it is broken in.

@Hughlysses

If you set the bars up for maximum comfort sitting still or going a low speed, they will be too tall and you will be pulling on them when traveling at highway speeds (keeping the wind from blowing you off the bike rather than having it support your weight). I find that the normal high-bars for the CR are just about perfect for where I ride and the speeds I go.

YMMV

been fighting with that compromise too, I actually like the clubmans very much....at about 80. I tried sitting straight up at that speed....not nearly as much fun

The bars on the 1125CR are aluminum and are "fat bars" at the clamp area. I believe they are 1.125" at the clamp area rather than 7/8" (like at the hand grip). The bars on the XB12Ss are steel and constant 7/8" diameter.

Your best bet for taller bars (believe it or not) is from the motocross and enduro crowd. They regularly use aluminum fat bars. Don't laugh: My Suzuki Bandit 1200 had Honda CR High bend bars. Felt great.

Two big things to watch out for:

1. That there is enough flat area to accommodate the street length grips (longer than dirt bike), clutch and brake levers/mirror mounts, and the grips.

2. If you drill locating holes for the electrics, be aware that you are seriously weakening the bar. Chamfer the edges to reduce the chance of cracks forming there.

Peter- The Caponord looks like a cool bike, but I already have a Uly. I'm just waiting to see if Froggy's ever going to build an 1125/Uly to see if I want to try that myself!

Fred- thanks for that info. Some of the guys here have installed "fat bars" on Ulys so that will be one place for me to look for ideas.

Fmaxwell,
I don't know this for sure as I have not measured or tried a swap but i read on another board that the buell bars center section is not the same as the fat mx bars.... and that they will not interchange.

I have a new set of pro tapers in the garage that I have been thinking of trying but knowing I need longer cables/lines has kept the idea on the back burner and I have been too lazy to bring a caliper home from work to measure.

The Cr is a more aggressive riding position than the Uly. I say get some miles under your belt and learn to not have your arms not holding you up.

Why people buy a second bike that's different than what they have then try to make it feel exactly like what they already have is a real mystery to me.

"I say get some miles under your belt and learn to not have your arms not holding you up."

I say fit the bike to you and the type of riding that you do. Constantly tensing your muscles to unweight your wrists will only lead to fatigue. It's why bikes built for Supermoto, MotoGP, and drag racing have radically different riding positions.

"Why people buy a second bike that's different than what they have then try to make it feel exactly like what they already have is a real mystery to me."

Because they have found a riding position that they are comfortable with but want a more refined bike with more power, less weight, and better handling. There's a real mystery wrapped in an enigma, huh?}

Spiegler and others make rise-up blocks and backset clamps that allow you to raise your bars an inch or so and also set them back closer to you as well. I'm thinking I may try those, if my Hi-bar kit ever comes in.
