Perhaps this is a stupid question (and I did use the search the feature to see if I could find the answer without making a post) but are we supposed to change the oil on our bikes between services? I bought an 1125R about 2 and a half months ago and now I'm at about 5,000 miles. I already had the 625 mile service done and the synthetic oil's suggested replacement interval is 5,000. Does that mean I should have the oil changed at 5625 and then have everything done except the oil change for the 6625 mile service? Thanks.

The weird thing on the intervals with the 1125 is they are originally in Km. That's what makes the oddball intervals. 6200miles is about 10,000 Km. I think. Or something like that. See dealer for details. Your mileage may vary. The views expressed on this post do not necessarily represent the views of BadWeatherBikers or it's sponsors...

I'll post the service interval chart tomorrow when I get in so everyone knows what to do to their 1125R/CR and when.

Chris can you also post what the expected times are for each service i.e. I know that Buell figures that the 12K service is supposed to be 7.1 hours.

Thanks

Goodness, gracious, matey, that info is contained in the link at the very top of the Board's main page, and buried inside it is https://www.buell.com/om/99480-08Y_en/file-13.asp# table-hdtopic000090-1.

If yours is 2+ months old it's an 08 so the manual applies; and I doubt they'll be changed for the 09.

Red don't know if you were talking to me or not but what I am looking for is the reference sheet that the dealers are given about how long a service should take, so I can start to budget for my upcoming services. once again they told me that the 12k service should take 7.1 shop hours that comes out to $560 for labor alone without parts. not exactly cheap.

Nope, Ekru, I'm responding to the first three posts on this thread. As to your query, there are several posters on this Board who work for Buell dealers who, hopefully, will respond to that.

Red, I have looked at the chart in the manual before but my question regards the HD synth oil, which is supposed to be changed every 5000 miles. It doesn't seem like a factory would tell you to change the oil in your bike after 5700 miles when their oil says change after 5000. Anyone else see this as a problem? (keep in mind I am no mechanic!)

When i had my V-rod the dealer said that syn 3 was good for 16000 kilometres if the bike was a daily ride

Well, Froggy beat me to the punch : )

Just to preface this prior to posting the following chart, flat rates are typically astronomically unrealistic, and do not account for the time on the test ride. I do not know of any flat rate shops in our area that go by these times, and most dealers price their services independently from this manual. But this will get you in the general realm of how long each service takes, Also, at least in our shop, we replace fluids & spark plugs on each service as a preventative extra step which skews these numbers as well. But it would be interesting to see how the do-it-yourselfers fair against this table;

Chris thanks, I understand what you mean, My dealer told me 7.1 hours for the 12k service, they told me that was from the chart.

I think they were trying to get me to buy the lifetime service agreement, by padding the expected hours a little to make it look more inline with the lifetime service price.

Get a service manual and do it yourself . I believe that if you ride you should be able to wrench on your own bike . You can save some money and understand how things work ! jm2c .....

I do the basics, have never pulled an engine but would love to learn. I have the service manual. but Looking at what is involved, sometimes I think it is actually cheaper to let someone that has all the correct tools and knowledge do the job.

If it takes a pro 5 hours to do the job its going to take me 15-20 the first time and I would rather be riding or spending time with my family than having the bike in pieces in the garage with me looking at it saying what the h+ll did I get myself into.

I also feel that you have to look at your time involved in a monetary way also so say you pay yourself $30 an hour it would still be cheaper to have the dealer do it. and that is before purchasing the tools, lifts, stands etc. that would be involved.

Its the manufacturer that set the service limits of the oil, not the maker of the oil. H-D does not manufacture it.

A Harley is air cooled and is more demanding on the oil and they set the limit at 5k. Which is actually the same for there conventional oil. The V-Rod was made that way to keep it universal.

Buell said, through there testing, that there water cooled motor can go 6k.

There are a lot of people out there, that still say 3k is all you should run oil because thats what they heard all their life. (until about 10yrs ago.) That thinking can't hurt!

I can tell you that I won't wait until 6200 miles to change my oil. I'll probably dump it around 3000. I'm a very big believer in keeping the oil as clean as possible all the time. Especially if it does a lot of track time and hot running.

I'm under the belief that you can almost never change your oil too much. I say almost because every day would be too much in my book. In all my new vehicles I dump the oil right at 400 to 500 miles no matter what the factory service interval states.

Change it as often as makes you comfortable.

...and most importantly....check it often. Look for color and content.
