Hey all, I'm interested in racing a Blast motor next season, and have been searching a bit for tips on how to put a Blast motor in a XB chassis. I know I've seen some pics, but not much info.
Would pulling a jug off a 12 motor be easier?

Well it might be cheaper and easier, but its 6 of one or half dozen of the other. Depends what you have access to.
Pulling off one jug would of course entail changing or modifying the crankshaft.
Or its modifying engine mounts (specifically the rear mount and the chain tensioner or using a swingarm with an axle adjuster). Swingarm bolts right on.
Have you checked the Badweb racing page? Slaughter is building one and I dont know if he's done his engine mounts yet.
I did own an XBlast, but I havent had time to document the rear engine mount. Front and top engine mount is easier if you use an XB head (which you'll want to do anyway).

You could of course you a stock framed Blast, but it depends on what your competition is using and/or class rules.

The class rules are pretty open, and the competition is a mixed bag. I would like to do the XB for comonality to my other race bike. A lot of the spares would be the same, and it just looks way cooler than the stock blast.

James. Really, I just helped facilitate the deal and sold him my share as he'd be the one racing it no matter which of us actually owned it. Now he has an all Buell stable!
I have first refusal if he ever sells it ; )

If you take a stock XB12 and lop off a cylinder, you'll be able to retain the fuel injection and be 600 cc's!
That'd be the way I think I'd go if I had to do it all again!

{Originally, the class was supposed to be a stock class and we raced for years lonely on a stock chassis Blast. Then the wave of converted twins came along and the cheap competitive racing class disappeared and the cost went way up. Sadly, our purchase of the XBlast was too late for us.}

Just one of the threads which has a bunch of Blast racing. In the picture is 2 XBlasts, 1 tuber and 1 stock framed Blast using a tuber front end and 17" tuber wheels.
Ernie Snair has a reputation for being knowledgeable on the Blast road racing. He's built more XBlasts that anyone else I think. He can be contacted at Glendale HD/Buell (a Badweb sponsor).
If you do contact him please mention Badweb and Me or James, so at least he'll know where you got his name.

Thanks for all the info guys, I'm trying to decide if I should build one from the ground up, or take my 12r that's sitting in the corner of my garage and mod it. Anyone have any details on the motor mods required to make this work? Blast crank, but what else?

It should literally be "cylinder delete"! Modify the XB12 crank to keep the long stroke and while you have the cases apart get them bored to the 600cc size-I think that should give 700+ cc's(?). (there might be an alternate easier way to keep the long stroke-one of our sponsors would know).
You'll need to fool the ignition into thinking you have 2 cylinders (dummy cylinder) and keep the fuel injection.
You'll need a little lower gearing. Either an XB9 primary or swap sprockets if you have chain drive.

But WHY?

What benefit would you have to make and XB with half an engine?

I mean, If you had a frame lying around, and If you had a Blast motor lying around, well then Why Not?

But to go though all the trouble you are thinking about(assuming your XB is running) just doesn't make sense.

But if you do, you can program the fuel injection, Matt Loose put XB fuel injection on a Blast and for the short distance I rode it it was pretty well sorted out(not that it is an easy job or anything)

Hey Swampy, for racing, thats why. I don't want to race a stock Blast, and would like to stay Buell. I'm already racing a 12R, but we have a new class in our club for ultralightweight, and a Blast engined XB would be legal. I don't really want to tear apart my street 12, but the engine needs to come out anyway for a tranny rebuild, and I couldnt help but think, slap in a Blast motor and away I go. I already have race spares, and it would be neat.
Maybe the best way, would be to buy a 12 motor and hack it, and throw that in. Or just sell the 12r and build a bike from pieces...decision time.

Do not sell the 12r and piece together a bike. I dont think the 12r is worth that much anyway. If its old, its not. If its newer, then you should have the better transmission. It would still be better to get a Blast motor to swap in and keep the old twin around. Unless, of course, you really do have enough spare parts around to make another bike
Besides hacking up the crankshaft, the twin case would still be usable for a twin again with the addition of a new crank.
The XB engine already has the 'better' parts and a stock XB top end is a stage 2 Blast top end with hot cams!
We've sat around a lot at the racetrack thinking and if we had to do it again, we'd buy an XB and lop of a cylinder (and it doesnt really matter which one)!


and I know its disturbing to some to hack a twin into a single! From a practical point of view it seems crazy to take a bike and cut its power in half....just to race. But its the easy way.

There has in the past been some debate on block deck height of the Blast and XB. Its reported to be different, which may make using a Blast crank in the twin block slightly more complicated. Stroke it with an XB12 crank!

Anyway, thats my opinion.

OK, I get it now, you have my permission!

Why not find a Blast motor, use the XB top end put some good cams in it, and contact Loose1 about what he had to do to get the fuel injection to work. That sounds like the easiest/fastest way to go....
