New to the forum and new to the Blast (and cycling you might say, its been 25 years since I've really ridden). So allow me to say hello.

Here's where I stand. Just bought a 2000 Blast from a friend who has taken meticulous care of the bike. Runs great and sounds awesome. In fact, I put 120 miles on it today and only had one problem. The battery wont hold a charge.

Now, before you say, "Get a new battery", I already did. The old one did the same thing. Put it on the charger and it works great for about 6-8 starts, then doesnt have the cajones to crank the engine. Pop starts fine and runs great once it gets going.

Put a multi meter on the battery with it running and am throwing between 12.3 and 12.6 v saw a spike to the 19s...

Im thinking I have a bad voltage regulator / rectifier. Since the bike runs great once running, I have ruled out the stator. If it were not generating enough power, performance would lack / fail.

What is the expert input and advice here? Is there a way to test the voltage reg/rec without buying one and trying it on for size? Anyone else had a similar problem?

Thanks for all your input and advice. I look forward to chatting with you...

Welcome to the Thumper Forum Drucifer!

Are you using an AGM battery?
The first law is:

"Thou shalt not use a flooded battery in thy Buell, it hath been so ordained that all Buells shall use battery technology from the 21st century."

There are two checks you need to perform.
Check the static voltage, battery fully charged and then let it sit for a couple of hours, engine off, check the voltage. It should be 12.8 or so. If it is anything less, you need a battery as it is not holding a charge.

Start the engine run it for a little while and check the voltage while the engine is running, it should be 13-14 volts. If it is not 13-14 volts you are not charging, either it is a bad connection, regulator or stator.

To determine if it is a stator or regulator, check the AC voltage at the stator output connector. The stator output with the engine running should be 28 volts AC, if it is not it is the stator, if it is putting out 28+volts AC it is the regulator.

Good luck, let us know how you turned out.

Awesome Swampy. Thanks for the input.

The battery i installed came from my local interstate battery dealer. Not sure about the flooded part. Its a sealed maintenance free jammie...

I have a regulator/rectifier on order. I will check the stator output this weekend.

I really appreciate the input. Im a DIYer by nature and loathe paying stealership prices if I can avoid it. I look forward to doing the maintenance and mods the folks here have to offer.

Ill update when I resolve the issue.
Thanks again!

Flooded Battery is one that has liquid acid in it.
It sounds like you got it from the correct place, but is there liquid in it?
Sealed, maintenance free might still mean that it is a "flooded" battery but chemically made up to not off-gas as much as a standard battery.

You have to use an AGM-Absorbed Glass Mat battery, no liquid in it and it can be mounted in any manner.

Any battery that has liquid in it will not work for very long if it is tipped on it's side like it is in a Blast, or for that matter any Buell. The liquid will not cover the plates and cause the plates to sulfate and the battery will loose capacity.

I always wonder why would anybody want to use a liquid battery that was designed during the times of Moses?

Just to be sure, is the stator output the two pronged socket that the regulator plugs in to?

Well, apparently it was the regulator. Just changed that and am pulling 14.43 to 14.45 volts at idle. Problem solved!

Thanks for the help and input.

Knew that was it when you said it spiked to 19.
