Race report from the weekend.

Friday. Travel day for us. We were not able to make Fri practice.

Sat. 2 practice sessions and then the Solo 16 (16 laps) race. This would be my practice for Sunday's races. Started on the inside with a good front wheel up launch. Backed off for Turn one and got passed. Going into T-7 saw a highside in the middle of the track about 10 bike lengths ahead of me. I was able to thread my way through without incident. At one point in T-10 the bike stalled. It fired right back up and I kept going. As the race wore on I was able to work my way up through the pack of 37 riders for a 14th overall and 13th in class finish, despite a couple of missed shifts. I noted 2 things during this race. Lack of seat time had my corner confidence down and the front brakes were toast. I was 2 seconds off my best lap time.

Sun. 1 practice and 2 races.

LWTSB. Started on the inside again. Got a decent start and held going into turn 1. By lap 2 or 3 I was the last bike in a long freight train of about 8 or so bikes. I came into T-10 hoping to pick one or two of them off, but my concentration was off. I ran into the gravel trap and had to be pushed out. Got back on the track, but I lost a lot of time and ended up getting lapped by the first 2 bikes. I finished last. I was 4 seconds off my best lap time.

F-2. Started in the middle. Got a decent start. Held off a few bikes through out the race until I had a couple of miss shifts. I brought home a 9th place finish. My fastest lap was just shy of 2 seconds slower than my best lap at the track.

All in all, I am still chasing the guys I was racing with in novice last year, just that we are in the back of the pack as oppossed to the front.

Thanks to my Dad, Xopti Mike and Smoke Tim for the help and support and Kevin Drummer for the front brake pads!

Packed up and headed home after a long, hot weekend! Hope to be at Roebling Road in July!

It was good to see you guys again. Sorry I didn't have time to chat, but we only got there on saturday...was running behind from the start!

Definitely understand the slower lap times this year as I experienced the same...don't know why as the track was good.

I was wondering where you went on SB... I jumped the start and had to do stop and go and it must have been timed right with your runoff cause I never saw you after that.

a big thanks to Michael Buffington, Laird and xoptiMike for great pit partners! so i got the bike ready in time but left late for the track and arrived for the practice day Friday morning as my first practice was finishing up. 2nd practice was after lunch so i got unloaded, registered and teched. went out on track and all was good. spent a little time finding the corners and was on my best times from last year and made some small improvements. we cooked some shrimp in the afternoon and some chicken and pork chops that night on the grill! yum yum! talked with DJ, Renee and Dustin and everyone was in good spirits and anticipating some good racing. saturday practice went well and the next thing you know i was gridded up for the novice heavyweight solo. i got a good start and was 3rd in turn 1 and 5th in turn 6 and holding. i hung in 5th trying to keep up for a number of laps and a little after halfway my clutch spun up driving onto the back straight out of 7 and pffft, pfft, pfft 3 went by. i struggled to ride fast with no high rev shift capability and hung on for 10th. i learned a little corner speed riding like that which would help out later in the weekend. my pit mates went out for the irish pub(which they never found) and i brought some more shrimp, sausage and boudin down to the air fence support chicken cookout. those folks were impressed with the boudin! after dinner i attacked my clutch and did some reshimming. went out for practice and everything was cool. gridded up for the 1st race heavyweight twins superstock and got out in 2nd place. i made a late brake move in 10A and went past J the leader and an expert but blew the 10B drive up the hill and had it to do over again. i followed from a little bit back and got hung through the 2-5 corners as the other 2 got through past backmarkers. i put my head down and charged once i got through and was able to reach J the leader prior to the white flag and got by but was unable to catch the next expert by the checkered flag. Yay, a win at Road Atlanta!! i gridded up in novice A superbike a little later and got another good start but got shuffled back in turn 1 but was in 4th for a few laps until the clutch issue returned. engine spinning up with no drive at high rpm shifts. a few went by shuffling me back to 9th and i tried to adjust my riding again to keep up. they gapped me a bit but as the 2 riders in front of me were fighting each other for position i was able to hang on to try and take advantage of any mistakes on their part. towards the end of the race they both went off track through the chicane and i caught Robin Davis. we fought back and forth for a few laps and he was able to block me from a pass in turn 12 for the finish and i came in 9th. had a good time and this was the first time i was able to fight for position with Robin as he usually leaves me way behind when he goes by! gridded up again for Heavyweight twins superbike and got shuffled back to 3rd in turn 1 as J and Grant went around on the outside. i got a little hung up but made a gpood advance in 10A as Grant rode through the grass but balked me as he came out up the hill in 10b. i made it by and had J in my sights. i tracked him down and was able to get by and i tried to speed off. as we came back through 7 and i hit the throttle to drive out the clutch spun up and J went by. it felt like it wouldn't catch at all and J was getting further away. i had to let the throttle all the way off and finally the engine was driving the rear wheel. i went into cornerspeed mode and tracked J down and put a pass on him in turn 12 on the white flag lap but he drove by on the throttle while i was spinning up and beat me to the finish line. i tucked in on him in turn 1 and was going to take him in 10A again so that he would have the least chance to get back by. as we were going down the back straight i was tucked in on his rear wheel when his hand went up and the bike slowed. i thought that his bike had quit and i narrowly avoided hitting him and as i sped by and looked up i saw that there was a red flag which handed the win to J. there was a 2 rider pileup in 10A that was directly in the impact zone that we were heading for at the bottom of the hill in the gravel. i was a little disappointed but happy with the decent finish with the malfunctioning bike. i reeled off a string of 1:40.--- but didn't hit my goal of 1:39something. next time for sure. i dropped 4 seconds since last year and with a properly functioning clutch i think i can see 2 more falling!! i had a great time and DJ did well also!! Dustin seemed to be struggling to the front and finished upright.
ride safe,
tim
