So the literbike class spec will be somewhere between the current superbike and superstock spec? Stock, modified suspension but unlimited internal engine modifications just as long as you stay under the hp limit. I think it's cool, should level the playing field.

Just saw the Literbike rules. How does the 1125r qualify for BOTH "Daytona Superbike" and "Literbike??"

I would think the 1125R with 'Heavy Mods' to make the HP limit for Literbike and a pretty much 'stock' unit for 'Daytona Superbike'..

Of course, I'm sure there will be other slight changes between the DS and L bikes, after all the weight limits are different as well (I think).. But, yeah, it's pretty close huh?

Just out of curiosity, why ISN'T the XBRR on the list for Daytona Superbike? The 1125R should be more than competetive in Literbike, so why put it in Daytona Superbike too?

The big-4 will have to work their 400's pretty good to get to 140hp, whereas the 1125 could almost hit it out of the box. Likewise the 848 will require some work to hit the numbers.

Also, why exclude machinery? I guess it makes sense for the race on Sunday, sell on Monday mantra, but an RC51 or 998 could hit those numbers pretty easily too. Why exclude the 1098? The 1098R would be over-the-top, but the base 1098 is excluded? Why?

I don't think that either class will push development along too much at those levels for the allowed twins. The 600's, maybe. If the XB12 were homologated for Superbike, THEN there would be continued development. If the XBRR was built for trickle-down tech, and it can make 140HP or more, then why exclude it? I'm sure I'm not the only Buell enthusiast who has been patiently waiting for the XBRR motor to be put in a street version.

I was sort of hoping for a next generation XBRR (along with a street-legal version), but I think this hints that's not going to happen.

While it would be cool to see the XBRR out there, it seems that Edmondson has expressed an interest in tying these bikes to production bikes, and I think the XBRR causes problems there (if you read the rules, you'll see that while the engines can be modified, they have to maintain stock displacement etc - the XBRR wouldn't fit into those rules without creating specialized rules for it, and I'm sure, as much as he wants to get Buell involved, Edmondson doesn't like the idea of creating special rules to allow bikes like the XBRR in).

Ultimately, I'd love to see Buell create an "850R", but they don't have one yet.

And since the 848 is basically a "detuned" 1098 (and Ducati probably has parts lying around that can bring it's power up to 140 HP without breaking a sweat), so while it seems a little odd, the 140 HP 1125R should be well matched with a 140 HP 848, and it should make for some entertaining racing.

Both are HP limited classes into which the 1125R fits. One will use a relatively stock engine, the other a more highly modified hot-rod engine.

When do y'all think the heavy motorcycle racing advertising will occur?
NASCAR is very advertising heavy.
I'm still having to rely on the internet to find motorcycle races on TV, and the times they show the races are more often than not at times when most can't watch.
Regardless of how this impacts MotoGP, NASCAR getting involved will be a good thing. I happen to think that MotoGP will gain in the long run, not lose.
ANYTHING to get motorcycles into the mainstream is a good thing.
It's time motorcycle stopped being a dirty word, the stigma carried by motorcycles in America has past it's time to live.

I think that gas prices could have a major impact on that perception, as main stream America is buying motorcycles at an increasing clip.

Elvis,the 848 is a completely different engine,it is not just a detuned 1098.I think it's crazy that a bike with 140 horsepower stock is in the same class as other bikes with 120.The 600's are going to really need some work to get to 140.

If i'm not mistaken, the factory FX bikes have been making over 140hp for a few seasons already. They will have to detune for next year. Brian

The mix of models approved is a negotiation between factories and DMG. And y'all have no idea how far the factory 600FX bikes are from stock. Well over 140HP, well, well over! As is the 848. Come on, WSB 999's were making 200: just multiply that by 848/999 and that gets you in the ballpark.

Anon,you have made my point.Not just any one can afford to build and race a 140 hp 600,which I believe DMG claimed the reasons for the new class was to allow more than factories to be competitive.What you will have now is a bunch of GSXR750's,a few Buell 1125's a few 848's and the factory 600's.

Read the rules better; you can't have 140 hp and minimum weight. So if the factory bikes have 140, they can't weigh 360. So you'll have heavier bikes with more horsepower against lighter bikes with a little less power. And they even took super-light riders like Pedrosa out of being an advantage. It's by far the most even rules package ever, and definitely closes the gap between factory and privateer. Now the deal will boil down to rider, set-up, team strategy and maybe which bike handles the best in an even playing field or maybe which one is the most streamlined to get max speed from the same horsepower. An infinitely more interesting class than today.

only time will tell whether the new class is infinitely more interesting than the present structure. the best prepared teams with the most talented riders should still prevail. formula extreme, to me, has been very interesting along with supersport and superstock. superbike became much better when Ben Spies came up to wrest the title from Mladin. they are both phenomenal riders and yoshimura has the experience to always bring the A game. we'll see.
