Work is progressing well on both bikes. Buell is together and just needs some final touches and hope to final to get to dyno soon.
Fired up the Yamaha with new turbo set-up,sounds nice and really looks great. Final safety wiring and a new battery will complete it.Dyno time for it also.

Damn, that's a lot of plumbing up front ...

Great looking cooler set-up.

I'd be interested in seeing how it does on the dyno.

Well, tomorrow is turbo fest at the dyno of Vallejo Buell. Snail is bringing his turbo Gix 1000,the Yamaha is ready to roll, and I fired up the Buell today for the first time since Aus.New fuel system and plumbing is A-OK,no leaks, kinks,or errors.Nitrous bottle is strapped on and new fuel pressure switch in place to keep me safe.
Probably going to need the HP from both my turbo bikes to come close to Snail's monster. Should be FUN!!!!

So,who is going to show this year at the Salt. Woz,Kurt Rellick,Terry,me,James(?)Snail and crew,
Anyone else coming to play??

I'll see you there, Jim. Not through having fun with the S-1. Made a few changes to get a few more mph's. Tried to email Glenn the other day to see if he was gonna be there again this year, but server bounced his addy back, so.....
Leaving Sunday 9/3, will set-up Monday morning, would appreciate a little patch of salt in the neighborhood.

Good luck out there. And keep an eye out for Chris Carr riding/driving the Bub streamliner gunning for a 322+ mph record.

If you get the chance have a quick chat with Chris. He a genuinely nice guy and very approachable.

Of course if one happens to be doing American Supercamp days with Chris as the guest instructor he'll gladly hit you with a stick if you're botching the technique as well as stuff you in the corners on purpose - not that that makes him a bad person mind you : )

Is there a 300 mph club, and if so, how fast must one actually go in order to be eligible for the 300 mph club?

Go Chris! Go Fire Man!

Blake there is not a 300 MPH club per se. There is a 300 MPH chapter of the 200 MPH club as well as 400, 500, 600 and 700 MPH chapters.

Big prizes for getting in too, you get a different color hat ;)

Steve,see ya there.
Paul's sissy bike only made 340 HP--but we still had some rpm left over,so more was in it. What an evil sounding beast. It spun up fast and hard.
The Yamaha survived, made 12 lbs of boost with good A/F ratio, but could not get a good tach signal so no HP #'s.
My bike had to wait until tomorrow as they had actual paying customers to do(as if!!)

Holy crap! Out of a 100cc motor!
Jim, what's the record he's running on?
That thing must really put out a howle when it starts coming on the cams.
I wish I could hear it in person.

Brad, you are welcome to come join the festivities.Bring your leathers as we can probably scare you up a ride between the 600 and Woz has a bike for the Run What Ya Brung class.
And 340 is good but the Hayabusas are up to over 700 out of 1300cc's.

Jim,
I woudl love to make the trip this year.
But, if I did I'd have to fine a new place to live.
Our "travel" budget is being saved for next years trip to see my son in Hawaii.
This year sounds to be a interesting one.
With you, Snail, Aaron and company all fielding some awsome hardware, things should be plenty interesting.
That's not even including all the other bikes that will be there.

Nothing quite like the smell of Nutec, Nitro and alcohol in the morning!!

Finally made some damn progress today.Been plagued by stupid oil leak that I finally fixed(cam cover and idiot installer) and we made a couple of passes.Apparently my new fuel system is much more effecient than the old Aerocharger stuff as I never could get the bike to richen up quite enough, now its a bit too fat.

But we made 185 HP.
Will change to a size smaller main and see.
And we fired Terry's Blast up for the first time this evening.Sounds really nice. He will dyno tomorrow.Damn am I beat.

Way to go Fire Man!

Snail, that bike is frightening. How the heck are you going to keep the rear tire from melting? : D

I still think hard race rubber (slick) would be the way to go.

What are you running for a rear tire Jim?

Street tires seem to be the ticket for everyone at this point whether it be at Maxton,Texas Mile, or Bonneville. All of the high speed folks I know--Noonan,Amo,etc are running on regular Z rated street tires. Race slicks were not designed for the tortures of the salt.
Just think, I am probably a jet change and a nitrous pill away from 200 HP.
Dyno chart soon.

What speed record(s) are you chasing this time Jim? I'll pay attention this time. : )

Some well-intentioned blathering on the LSR tire issue. : )

Here's where I'm coming from with this hypothesizing, just some things that might be worth considering, stuff that seems logical and makes sense in my armchair land speed racer kind of mind. : ) I realize that I could be totally wrong.

1. I agree that race tires were not designed for the torture of the salt; are street tires?

2. Aren't race tires designed to endure the torture of extreme heat, extreme speed and spinning up under extreme power/acceleration?

3a. Anyone ever try racing slicks at Bonneville in good conditions (hard dry salt)?

3b. If so, with what results?

4. I've seen photos of motorcycle street tires at Bonneville that have fallen apart around the center perimeter. Not sure if that was mostly due to abrasion, heat, or a combination of the two.

5. I know that slow old me with my measly 100rwhp Cyclone can waste a rear Z-rated sport-touring tire in a few sessions at the track while lapping six seconds slower than with DOT racing rubber. Slicks reportedly provide even better grip/performance.

Granted, this is all pie-in-the-sky theorizing at this point. But maybe it's worth considering if it might provide an advantage in safety and/or performance. Or it could be a waste of money.

6. Ever seen the Superstock, Superbike and MotoGP racers lighting up their rear tires during a race, then continue on at lap record pace for another 20 laps?

7. I understand that at high speed circuits like Mugello and Catalunya MotoGP machines are hitting 200 mph+ while the rear tire is spinning up to significantly higher speeds under acceleration. They do this for some 70+ miles of racing. It seems unlikely that a street tire, designed to work in normal ambient conditions including on the wet would endure that kind of abuse.

8a. Is spinning up the rear on the salt more severe than spinning up the rear tire on asphalt?

8b. If so, why is a street tire better suited to withstand that kind of abuse?

9. Anyone ever tried a rear racing slick on the salt?

10. What do the tire manufacturers say?

The one variable that I can see that may well govern the issue is the possible benefit to having some tread to help grip the salt, thus a street tire could well provide improved performance.

Just fun stuff to think about, for me anyway. Heck if you could sneak some studs into your rear tire, that might be helpful, at least until they start flying out through the seat into your... LOL

Good luck on the dyno. Amazing stuff you are doing there.

Blake,

You don't have to theorize. There are plenty of dirt roads in Texas. Find a local sheriff and get him to ok letting you run whatever up to 150 or so. You will learn everything you need to know about tires and traction for racing at Bonneville. The amazing thing is how the bike will want to stay upright and straight no matter what after about 100mph. Turning and stopping will be your only difficulty. It is however much safer at bonneville. Traction wise it is remarkably similar. Surface can vary from loose pea gravel to well worn concrete in ten feet or a couple of hours waiting in line. Soft spots and ruts are everywhere after the car guys tear it up some. Bubs has a huge advantage for bikes as the longitudinal ruts left by cars are less.

The really tough records are all about traction and being there when the "good salt" shows up.

This Texas Mile thing sounds like fun.

Here's a couple of excerpts from their "must read" page:

"PIT ROAD SPEED IS 10 MPH no exceptions - this is a major safety hot-button and you will be spanked and sent to bed without supper."

"The Return Road - A RIGHT TURN. IF you slow enough to SAFELY make the right turn to the return road - good for you."

"OVERRUN Beyond the Shutdown - Oops or Oh S**t!!! If you cannot SAFELY make the right turn to the return road, don’t worry. You still have serviceable overrun. KEEP IT STRAIGHT!!! Spinning to scrub speed is never a good idea."

Whattaya think, Fireman? Ever been to Texas?

Paul,
The way you put it, it's easy to understand why you'd want some tread on the tires. : )

RT,
Sounds interesting. I have a feeling that Jim might be very interested in coming down for a visit sometime. : )

Blake,

We've tried both on our XRs. with about 90 rwhp we tried to keep weight down so have played with tread and gearing. In the afternoon when there is some slip to the salt some tread is better, in the morning when it gets hard the tread cause some slip.

With the Buel in 05 when speed week was rained out and the salt was really slippery we went to a stock Pirelli and went from 145 to 151. The pirelli has tread on the edges but none crosses the centerline. At low speeds we had traction in the loose and as we built speedwe had a slick?? We are going to run a couple of different size Pirellis at World finals. Tech inspectors were somewhat suspicious of chainging the tread pattern befor runs. Guess that was a first for them, dirt trackers and hill climbers are always messing with tread.

I would sort of like an unlimited supply of money to buy wheel and tire combinations with a single sided swingarm to get a real handle on salt traction. You also only got one run a day this year at speedweek. Bonnevillle is a tough track. Oh I have run my S2 up to about 135 on a gravel road in Peoria County IL. My suggestion was not tongue in cheek, that process is done all over this country. Nuts but done.
