This bike has been approved to use in the AMA Formula Extreme class.
Honda got really pissed off at the AMA because rules state there has to be at least 50 production bikes the race bike is based on. They interpreted the rules very loosely for Buell, given it's not based on any production bike.

Here is a quote from Honda's official Press Release:
Recently, however, conflicting interests within the AMA organization have caused a division of ideology and a blurring of the vision that American Honda has always supported. Recent issues, including the departure of dedicated individuals from AMA Pro Racing and its inability to stand by its own rulebook with regard to recent Formula Xtreme considerations, have been particularly alarming.
Honda believes the rulebook is a sanctioning body's most important asset. When a governing body violates the sanctity of its rulebook, it loses credibility with everyone associated with racing--the teams, the riders, the sponsors and, most importantly, the fans who rely on sanctioning bodies to create racing environments which ensure fair, balanced and exciting competition. Honda believes the AMA and other sanctioning bodies must be responsible for coordinating the efforts of all participants to ultimately benefit the sport. Honda also believes that all manufacturers, through technical committees, must participate in, and collaborate on, development and harmonization of technical rules for each class of competition.

So Honda resigned from the AMA board of directors.
Personally, I like that Buell will be competing, and it will be very challenging for them. I don't think Honda should worry about them quite yet. Wouldn't the XB12 RR be a fun bike to ride, though! As if yours doesn't wheelie enough, already...

Ah, the cries of unfairness begin. Anyone remember when the NHRA V-Rod appeared on the scene? Sounds really familiar : )

The RR is based on a production bike, the XB12R, which is why it was accepted. It absolutely meets the rule book for the class. The rules just allow a lot of modifications.

Understatement in the extreme since the rules allow "unlimited" engine modifications.

No one blinked when they approved the MGS-01 (Moto Guzzi). Although I guess the likely hood of seeing a serious factory effort from such a small company so far from home is pretty well non existant.

The Guzzi comment is on mark.
An OHC multivalve short-stoke special amongst a family of longer-stroke 2 valve pushrod twins sounds very similar.
Could be just the fact that they've not had serious talent saddled up or placed very high in qualifications.
I'd love to see a street version with the XBRR engine available for developement but considering the MoCo's history with the XR and VR, I won't hold my breath.

Looks like NO XB-RRs at Barber nor Fontana.....If it's just a clutch why can't this be sourced from somewhere else????I've been OPTIMISTIC for some time now but this is getting to be a major DRAG!!!!I'd hate to think the Elves working on this "single sourced" this piece!...Soooo will we see the bike at Sears Point?????I know whats gonna be said...."It's gotta be right or we won't race it!".....I agree,but this is the "WORLD STAGE" now.....lets put the same time into this thing that Erik put into that bodywork!!!!!

Interestingly, I am going through my Cycle World for May 06, and there is a story about the XB-RR, and there is a line that says specifically: "None of the riders intend to chase the FX series beyond Daytona, possible exception being American Mike Ciccotto..."
So I suppose we shouldn't be surprised at not seeing the XB-RR for a while.

Guzzi have a new bike planned for next year. Based heavily on the MGS-01 but with a lot more power and around 180mph potential in road trim. It will be interesting to see what the organisers have to say about that : )
