The ole girl has about had it. She leaks oil around the rear cylinder and fouls the fan shortly after its changed, she never has had good/reliable engine behaviour, and she's always been a bitch to work on. At this point she's a cool weather hooligan...at least until the next irreplacable or hard to get at part fails.

Managed to get out for about an hour of cool weather twisties this afternoon (without a working fan) and it took some doing to get reacquainted with a bike that falls into turns and keeps falling if you aren't careful: the pitfalls of two wheeled wind therapy on an FJR1300, which needs to muscled into turns (relatively speaking).

I'll keep her battery charged and continue to treat her as the hooligan bitch that she is, but she's been ridden hard and put away wet...and when she finally groans that enough is enough, then look for the "part out" sale.

The era of the Buell has come and gone...

let the fan-boy hate begin...LOL

You'll not find a bigger fan of the Ulysses that I am of my XT. I'm also a fan of reality. At some point every bike reaches the point of no return. It's just sad that yours is there already.

No hate coming your way from me.

Might bring more $ parted out rather than whole but when you are exhausted with her there are some of us that would love to resurrect and restore these bikes. Please let me know if you are at that point.

I'd suggest you look at the rear PCV valve and grommet. The grommet is notorious for aging and letting oil escape the rocker box. The oil then runs down, and all over the back of the engine, into the fan and coats the transmission.

I removed the fan on my ‘06 Uly around a year ago. I hooked up a LED light to the fan wires so I would not get an error light. Works great, one less thing to worry about. I would do it again in a second. Give it a shot.

For cryin' out loud!

The replacement fan (on Amazon) is $50 or so, plus a bit of fiddling to fit it in the original mount. That engine is a tad more expensive.

Instead of wasting money on a LED, why didn't you put some black tape over the Check Engine Light - because that's not important, either.

Not really...considering what you have to do to get to it in the first place, especially if you've got exhaust headers and engine mount bolts that are frozen/rusted in place. again, goes back to non-optimal design when considering maintenance.

Using more force than is probably a good idea, I found I could get the rear PCV out of the rocker box without moving the engine. Then - carefully avoiding letting any crap into the opening - remove the old grommet.

I needed to do a good bit of cleaning around the PCV before I started, as the escaping oil had collected a good amount of sand. I used Gunk Engine Degreaser - 'not a sponsor'.

Using great care and more than a little force, re-install the PCV.

It doesn't appear possible to do the same with the front PCV without moving the engine.
