My 06 oil level after riding was at the add line on the dip stick. I added oil when cooled down and checked the level (cold engine). It was way over the overfilled line. Drained enough so is just below the line when cold. How much should I have added? Is there enough, or is there too much oil still in the engine at this point (just below overfilled line when cold)?

Clarification: What volume of oil required from add line to full on dip stick? Didn't see anything in the manual.

The dipstick on my '09 says "add 150 ml" on the side. Is the '06 not the same?

When low I add about 4 Oz.
But, any where on the x-es is ok.

You don't want the oil level at the top of the x-es as it will just be blown into the air intake and burned.

Mine usually sits at the bottom of the x-es after an oil & filter change.

Beer and oil levels seem to run together. I just keep level at 2x below top line and world is good. Never fool with dry sump levels cold. Oil was in it last time I rode and garage floor is clean , go ride again. I do let bike idle half to a full minute and let the cases scavenge out back to tank. Motor off check level right then. If add oil do right then. Then go thru it after next ride.

Most folks end up at 2X's as Sagehawk said. I recommend when you do an oil and filter change to only put 2.5 quarts of oil in, including what you put in the filter. So 2.5 quarts total. Go for a 20 minute ride, come home and leave it idling on side stand on flat surface. Remove dip stick while running and wipe off. Kill engine and then take a reading. Wherever your level is on the stick is correct for your bike. Do not add anymore oil or it will just end up in the air box. Do not try to take a reading while running because the oil return shoots right onto the dipstick and will give you a false reading. DAMHIK! These are all things I've learned from experience and reading what others have discovered. Oh, then go have fun!

Great advice. The oil level was in below the max line after short ride this morning. Also, the 06 ULY dipstick does not have volume to add between min/max lines (see attached photo).

Second X from the bottom. Fully warmed up. On the side stand on level ground

Tootal has it right for you.

Collectively we all figured this out over a couple of years when they were new.

Mine can still go 2500 miles using less than a quart. '06 with 64,000 miles on it.
