Oh wise BadWeb collective. I have a question that may be too stupid for most of you to suffer through:

Does anyone know the type (English or Metric) of screws the size and thread count for the screws that hold the fly screen on? I want to replace the torques heads with Phillips heads to make things easier.

I get the proper size Torx t-handle and try to replace the screws and nylon washers every year . . . seems like I have my fly screen on and all all the time messing about . . . .

The Torx really work well.

I also put a drop of oil in them from time to time and never start one in except with my fingers . . be very careful with the threads in that soft metal housing.

I tapped up to 1/4-20 size. Stronger and easier to thread. http://store.curiousinventor.com/media/images/guid es/metal_working/screws/machine_screws3.jpg?124841 3326

Still using the button head, right?

I had my fly screen off to accesss the ballasts for my HID headlights. Several of the Torx didn't want to start right and were either very loose (mostly stripped) or very tight like they were cross threaded.

Electroglider wouldn't 1/4-32 (fine thread) be better because of the vibration issue? I'd be afraid 1/4-20 would back themselves out to easily.

Yeah, I'd still use button heads. Anything else would look crummy.

I tapped mine out like EG, and used black torx T27 1/4-20 screws with black nylon washers. Looks nice on the Orange flyscreen.

Blue loctite keeps them in place.

I'm thinking of installing helicoils if there is enough material. Between leftover loctite crud in the threads and general hamfistedness, I've managed to bung up the threads in one of these bigger holes. Loctite seems to hold it for now, but it's a matter of time before it strips entirely.

The 1/4-20 screws never back out. Stainless steel when properly torqued into aluminum tends to stay put. Fine thread is too easily cross threaded for my taste.

The stock flyscreen screws aren't Torx, they're Allen head, at least on my bike.

I had a few stripped out (HID install, aux light install, Stebel install, LED flasher install...) so I tapped up to 1/4-20 AND used helicoils. Plenty of material, they hold fine, and I have a larger bit size now for easier tool use.

(a crop from a tail of the dragon photo...best I had to show the bolts...)

Totallystainless.com has great prices on these. I haven't lost any of these screws but I have bought extra screws for the chin fairing and other body work.

I think mine are 1/4-20...but whatever I tapped them to is the same as shift linkage bolts. Saved a bueller up on the UP one homecoming trip when he lost a bolt. Pulled one of my six, fixed him right up.

Thanks Cyclonedon, I wasn't sure of the size. I'll pick some up on my way home tonight.
