Well, the time has come to put my 2008 XT up for sale.
It's in the classifieds. I wanted to thank you all for the help over the past five years I've owned the bike. Buell owners are a unique community to be sure, and I've enjoyed being a part of it.

Why are you selling it, Discochris? Has it been a problem?

A number of reasons, but I'd like to get back into something more along the lines of a traditional sport-tourer. Particularly something with a bit more wind/weather protection for traveling. I love riding my Uly, but I've never been able to get used to taking it long distances.

Discochris-
I may know an interested party from the t.c. area. They prolly will wanna take a look at my uly before they head ur way. He is a do it your self guy so that fits in with owner mentality of these bikes.

No matter what happens with ur uly hope u still keep posting here.

B.

Fltwistygirl,

That'd be great. Please let me know. I'm in the western suburbs.
The bike is on craigslist and cycle trader as well, or I can send you or your friend a bunch of photos if you'd like.

Funny you should mention that - I've actually been thinking the same thing. I love riding the Uly on the curvy roads, but getting there for me is becoming a bit more bothersome that I'd like. Maybe I'm just getting old and soft, but I'm starting to long for the days when I had my Honda ST1100 with the awesome wind protection.

I actually have a crush on the new BMW R1200RT these days - maybe one day when the kids are older and I win the lottery.

have you guys looked into adding the Memphis shades deflectors? I'm waiting for more cash to add them myself. that might cut down on the elements that bother you..
my Uly IS SPORT TOURING!
also my MadStad windshield is nice.

I have the Palmer windshield bracket. It helps a little, but it's not the same thing.

Palmer Products windshield brackets
Madstad ADV windshield
Memphis Shades deflectors

I have them on my bike, and the wind protection is fine. The Memphis Shades deflectors made a huge difference.

I also lust after a BMW R12RT, even went to the dealer and took a used one for a test ride, but I can't justify the price. I have about $4k in the Uly and a fairly low mileage used RT is at least $8k.

I have the Madstad brackets and shield, and as of last fall I have the Memphis Shades deflectors as well. They help for sure, but it's still not the equal to my old ST1100, either in comfort or wind/weather protection.

I used to be able to crank off 7 or 9 500 mile days in a row on that ST, in pretty decent comfort. I haven't tried it on the Uly (no time, 2 young kids, etc...), but I know that it would be much more of an endurance test than it ever was on the ST.

Again, age and my increasing softness may have something to do with it.

I used to do a lot of IBA stuff - I'd like to get into it again. I've done 1500 in miles in 24 hours, 2000 in 48, 5000 in 5 days etc. All on my old Concours. I've done two 1000 mile days on my Uly, and it was a lot harder. The big thing isn't just weather protection (I rode the Uly 465 miles in falling snow until my belt broke) but fatigue. Having that constant wind on you, even with the palmer bracket, is a lot more tiring. On a several day long trip doing 500-700 miles a day, that adds up.

All of the 2014 1200RT's are under a do not ride admonition for a rear shock failure problem. No real word on when a fix is coming but BMW riders are pretty pissed.

Other hand I have a set of the Memphis shades for Ulys if anyone wants them.

I wouldn't touch a BMW. I have a lot of friends that have them (and a lot that HAD) them. Final drive issues, shock failures, expensive parts, smallish dealer base. They used to make the best bikes in the world. I don't think that's been true for quite a while.

They used to be dominant in the Iron Butt Rally. That mantle has passed to the FJR.

That is what worries me about BMW - reliability.

Just researched that rear shock issue - that would piss me right off if I had just spent $20K on a new bike! Seems like they have an issue with testing bikes before selling them.
