On going tinkering.

I found the rear brakes on the metal pads and the fluid like black paint with "bits" in it. A running issue that seems to have been caused by dirt in the fuel tank blocking the filter and a washable air filter that felt like it was cover in glue. Plus the joints, throttle, clutch cables and ignition/key locks that have not been greased/oiled in many a year.

Or in other words why do people not look after there bikes. In this case I got to the bike before any major damage could happen.

Just a little TLC can, and has in this case, made a good bike even better.

Some people just don't care what condition their [insert anything they own] is in. My DR650 was in a pretty bad state when I bought it...actually very similar to your MZ. Nothing major just not very good up keep on basic maintenance. It's in a much better condition now as is your MZ. On the bright side, this type of owner lets people like you and me pick them up for cheap.

BTW...I'm sure those SM tires are fun on the road, but I'd have to spoon on a good 50/50 knobby!

Cool.

"BTW...I'm sure those SM tires are fun on the road, but I'd have to spoon on a good 50/50 knobby!" I would as well but my riding is all road stuff and mainly in the City as well.

"On the bright side, this type of owner lets people like you and me pick them up for cheap". Which is what I did myself. I am spending a few bucks on the bike but nothing big.

I always service a bike once I have it, I do not trust others, as there is always something that needs doing even if it is just an oil change. In this case $150 covered all the service and needed parts. The bike was $1500. So $1650 and that is dirt cheap for a bike of this quality/ condition/ year/ miles and history. I will spend another $100 to bring the bike up to a good spec as I think the bike is worth it.
