Hi everyone,

I bought my first Buell a 1996 s1 last summer, then this year I added a 1998 S1W lightening and now a 06 Uly picked up from a fellow BWBer. I got the bike this weekend and was warned that an ignition wire needs to be traced and replaced. I have not yet done that and have not had much of a starting issue except 2 times after hot it did not want to start, gave it 2 mins and it started up. That is not the problem now some rather strange thngs happened today. First the horn only works about every 4th press, it may start out working moments later not then it starts working again. Then my blinkers some times worked then not. Then the blinkers worked but the dash blinker light did not. The bike ran fine through all this including high and low beams (HID) worked fine.
My guess is that I have a bad ground which I will need to trace.
Does anyone have any ideas other then possible ground issue?

Thanks, Jeff

The ground wire is on the steering head behind the head lamp assembly.

There is a power lead wire in the steering neck bundle that has a triple splice in it that will cause the problems you are seeing. Left side of the steering neck, large wire bundle. Where it crosses the gap from the bike frame to the bracket on the steering neck. Unwrap the harness to expose the wires. I moved my triple splices(there are two) up into the fly screen area allowing for four less wires to have to bend and flex there.

If you are inclined to move the two triple splices up to the fly screen area with single wires, you are decreasing the bundle diameter by four wires. When I did this to mine there was no need to go to the later wire bundle retainer.

Hi Guys,
Thanks again for your ideas, It turned out to be 3 broken ground wires. With those fixed I put on about 80 miles without issue.
While I was fixing and testing things, I moved the 2 triple splices as suggested by Etennuly, and relocated the wire bundle as suggested by teeps. I think both of these fixes are an improvement.
Thanks for all your help.
Jeff

"I think both of these fixes are an improvement". Yes they are otherwise you will end up needing to fix them again. I know?

I agree and yesterday took the Uly 505 miles to MD and back in one day. Had no real problems, but 2 glitches, once at 80 mph the middle red light came on (the one that comes on when you turn bike on and fuel I think is pumping) lost power dethrottled it went off and never came on again. I have read over posts here to see that it has happened to others for various reasons. Also I pulled over for a moment and when I started I no longer had a working speedo I pulled back over turned off then on and restarted her and the speedo was working again. Other then that the bike was comfortable and ran and handled wonderfully.
Thanks for all your help,
Jeff
