hey, y'all

im leaving tuesday from VA, and headed for OR on the uly. taking US-33, stopping at the AMA museum for an hour or so, and spending a night at gramma's house in northern Il. other than that, i'll just be headed due west, and trying to make time.

i'm looking for places to stay the night along the way, and of course i will be staying at motels but it'd be great to meet some of the finest people i've found on the internet, instead of burying my head in the sand as i cross this great country.

i'm planning on doing 500 mile days, so please speak up if you happen to have a couch i could borrow for a night and are along the way

My door is open...but I'm only in MD. Find the intersection of I-70 and I-81...and I'm ten minutes from there. Not much help...sorry.

Safe journey!

Good luck with Iowa.
Last time I tried to go west on my X1, it was 100+ degrees.

I got about to DesMoines before I couldn't take it any more and doubled back.

That's a state that needs a fast forward button.

You will be passing about a quarter mile from my work in Dayton, and about 10 miles from my house.

Unfortunately we don't have a guest room right now, but if you need tools / garage / whatever I'll be happy to help.

"That's a state that needs a fast forward button."

Illinois, Kansas and Nebraska fit that description as well. No offense to the badwebbers that call any of these home.

Fort Collins is an easy 35 minute commute from Cheyenne, WY. Let us know if that fits into any of your 500 mile destinations and which day you think you'll be cruising thru. At a minimum, we could give you some suggestions of some routes that could give you a better flavor of what riding thru Wyoming/N. Colorado is like when you stray a bit from I 80.

When you get to Idaho/Oregon I can give you some great routes to stay off the interstate. I am west of Boise close to the Oregon border.

Made it to Ohio, about 560 miles. Gonna check out the AMA hall of fame in the morning.

Us33 was too fun to stop and take pictures. It reminded me very much of blood mountain in ga but with less traffic ; )

That AMA museum is pretty sweet. Lots of cool sentimental stuff in there.
Example: Ed Hertfelder's Tired old XL600 is in the lower floor.

Seeing that almost brought a tear to my eye. His "duct tapes" column was a highlight of my dirt rider magazine for the greater part of a decade of my childhood.

I'm in Omaha, NE metro area but leaving tomorrow (Thursday) east to Iowa City for a funeral. Just got back from a Sturgis, SD trip. Keep safe and stop to smell the roses a bit because there is a lot of interesting country along the way.

Saw the AMA hof and then lost a rear wheel bearing outside of Chicago. 3 hours later I was back on the road and grandma had dinner still waiting for me.
What a long day.

I should be able to make it to Cheyenne Wy by sunset tonight, and will be looking for a place to stay the night.

I've reached my limit of how much corn I can see in one day. So close to escaping Nebraska, but still in it.
683 miles, with a late start and no mechanical issues : )

I've stopped for the night but ill live to tell tall tales another day

Glad to hear you survived Iowa and almost all of Nebraska in one day. Hope you got a good night's rest.

If you feel like getting off the beaten path a bit, and don't mind spending a couple more hours riding, I highly recommend heading south towards Fort Collins then west on 14 thru Poudre Canyon and over to Walden (good), Steamboat Springs (better) or Craig (best). Then you could take whichever road brings you back to I-80 to resume piling on the miles. 14 is an epic road that crosses the continental divide. If you decide to do that, let me know and maybe I could meet up with you and ride for a bit.

Other option is catching Happy Jack road (210) in Cheyenne and taking it to Laramie but I hear that it may be under road construction and you may have already had enough of that.

In any event, hope you keep us all posted and continue with safe and drama free travels. B.

General Custer's scout returned from a scouting trip and told the General he had good and bad news. The General asked for the bad news first. The scout told him "we're all going to die"! The General, distraught, wondered if it was even worth hearing the 'good' news but asked the scout to go ahead with it. The scout said the 'good' news is we don't have to ride back across Nebraska! : )

Having shared that,: ), I enjoy riding on Neb. 2 from Grand Island through Broken Bow and up to Valentine. All states have their nice areas.

Well today was 783 miles. US30 helped tally them up in a hurry. And what a refreshment it is to get off of the freeway and onto such a beautiful highway.

I broke a turn signal stalk trying to ' recline ' and have lost a half quart of oil thru the transmission output seal over the last 2 days.

I'm sure I can close it tomorrow. Of course I'll stop by the coast first to make it a true 'coast to coast' run

There's a decent dealer in the Boise area, High Desert HD I believe. They seem to be okay folks there, if you need to find parts or whatever.

I'm glad US30 worked out for you, and you got into ID okay. I debated on maybe trying to meet you in Park City and pilot you through the Salt Lake/ Wasatch Front exchange and stuff, but I'm sure getting off the slab was a good choice. When I called I thought you might still have been stopped. Was going to recommend going west past Bear Lake, through Logan canyon (sweet road) then up north from Logan...

But it seemed just as well to let you ride, sorry to have missed you.

Sounds like a great trip.

A dealer can replace that transmission output shaft seal pretty quickly; I got the one replaced on my 07 (with only ~1000 miles on the bike) under warranty. IIRC, it only took them about an hour.

I made it 'coast to coast' and then doubled back to the house without further complications. 712 mi on the trip odo for today

I'll get the seal and let my dad help me with it. Working on cars is kinda a bonding thing for my dad and I. And I allready have the 2 3/16 or whatever " socket for the front pulley. Haven't used it in a few years and it needs to earn its rent for that spot on the shelf

Something I noticed but didn't put 2and2 together right away;
In the middle of the trip (At the higher elevations) the motor was running damned poorly. No bottom or top end. Above 5000 RPMs it felt like it was misfiring, but wasn't throwing a code and it just didn't have the 'grunt', But When I made it to the left coast, it seemingly came back to its full strength.

What I'm guessing happened is the air was thinner at higher elevations, and now in back at sea level again, it's got enough 02 in the air to breathe and burn

Elevation could indeed be a factor. It may help to run the bike at a steady 3000 rpm s for about fifteen minutes to get the ecm to adjust.
I had similar behavior from mine when we brought our fl bikes to Colorado and went from sea level to 8 or 9k feet.
