This past weekend I was riding to Death Valley from Shoshone and my engine made a HARD rattle and died, wont turn over. Bartel's harley has it now and will look it over next week. Question is. Do I want a 1250 kit or even a 88 kit since it will most likely need a rebuild? |

If it was the crank, and you don't mind letting us know, I'd like to "log it" in the XB12 crank problem list. When you rebuild, you can get the short crank you wanted. A little worse fuel economy, but more power and a great howl at 7800 RPM. |

You want us to tell you what you want? :-P Want your Uly and for it to have more power and you to have an empty wallet, go for it. Want a faster ride and an empty wallet, dump the Uly and get a new bike (multistrada will fit the bill and effectively empty your wallet, or if you can wait for the inevitable the AX will probably have about the same price tag as the Duc). Want your Uly back and still have some money, just get it fixed. Options are yours. |

I would recommend that you disassemble the bike down to the last bolt. Categorize all the good parts, make a list and sell them to us when we can no longer buy them from H-D. Use the money you make on this to buy any new bike you may want at that time. Just a thought.... |

Whaaaat! Sell or part out my Uly? Id sooner sell a kidney. To be honest I forgot about the AX. Something to consider there. That is a short crank? 883 is the same stroke I think, so is it an aftermarket crank? |

Sell your Uly and a Kidney would be a good down payment on the Duc or AX . I'm really looking forward to the AX but for 20k it better be amazing! And I'm getting slightly tired of waiting. |

Repairing the Uly will empty your wallet. Buying a Multistrada will empty your retirement account. Just sayin... The XB9 motor has the same pistons as the XB12 motor, but a shorter crank. Thats how they get the difference in displacement. So if you rebuild with an XB9 motor as your base, or even an XB9 crank (I think they will swap over), but "even bigger" pistons you could be to an 1150cc displacement, but with a short stroke motor. |

XB9 and 12 use different pistons. They are the same bore width so they drop right in, but the XB9 pistons have a different shape and will give a higher compression than the XB12 pistons. |

'Repairing the Uly will empty your wallet. Buying a Multistrada will empty your retirement account. Just sayin... " I had an 06 Uly, sold it and bought an 09 Multistrada, then sold it for an 08 UlyXT The 'strada was lots of fun, had Soul like a Buell, but was indeed expensive, Don't know if Ducati has solved this or not, but I was into my second gas tank replacement when I sold it. The maintenance cost and gas tank problems with ethanol are well documented. Thats a shame, because I really do like the bikes. However, the Uly is nearly as much fun at a lot less bucks to buy or maintain. |

Quickest, easiest, probably least expensive to do, find a wrecked bike or a used engine and have it back to stock in a dozen hours or so. Save your money for the AX..... |

thanks for the info and advice. i guess ill wait till they get the engine apart to decide which way to go, but i had a great time with the stock motor so im leaning toward that. |

I'm having a great time with my stock engine! More power would take and use more money to keep it going, when a stocker has been powerful enough to get the job done, get great fuel mileage, and be dependable through it all. But then.....your's broke!!! |

I don't think I would like more power in it. Maybe another gear, but the bike is just so light up front, especially two up. I might fall over backwards every time I turn the throttle... |

I don't think the AX will ever show up. I think EBR is just in the business of limitied production race bikes. Unless Erik gets into bed with another manufacturer with a support channel(and I don't think he will) a reasonably priced prosumer model like the Uly will never appear. Just my .02 cents. But I would wait around for the new KTM 1100 adventurer coming in Oct! That thing is sweet. If you want to stay with the Uly though, I'd get an estimate of work before I spend anything on it. You might be able to pick up a nice 2008 Uly out there somewhere for cheap. Pull the parts off the old one you want to keep, sell the other parts to make up the difference. I'd like to find a cheap set of heads. I'd like to see if my local cylinder head guy in Mpls could manufacture Water Cooled Heads(yes, just the heads) for our bikes........... what do you think of that idea??? |

Uly_dude, that is a rat-hole that has been discussed in countless other threads. No reason to go down this road on this thread. |

after 2 weeks of waiting Bartels called saying they did a compression check. the rear cylinder had 170psi but the front only had 115psi. also the front spark plug was loose and the electrode looked like someone took a ball peen hammer to it. So, it looks like it will be another 2 weeks before they can take the engine apart. Seems like a long time for not much done, maybe they are just too busy with repairs, it is a Harley dealer after all. |

Desmo, Hey! You're not at a normal Harley dealer. You gotta have patience and a little respect. Bartels' has a dedicated Buell mechanic that bides his time servicing and accompanying the Bartels' race bikes during race times as well as day to day normal service duties for the rest of us. Count your blessings. |

I didnt mean to sound ungratefull , it's just frustrating waiting to hear the news. There are plenty of other harley dealers I could have gone to, but I went to Bartels specificaly because of there reputation with Buell. |

I got a call from Bartels today, seems part the piston skirt broke off and fell down into the crank area, they are hoping it stayed in one piece and didn't destroy anything else. Fingers crossed. anyone ever hear of a skirt breaking? I've burned holes in the top before but not a skirt. |

Actually, my engine has a lot of piston slap going on but then again, it always has. If it gets worse, or breaks, I'll go .010 and have it honed out with torque plates. I get the feeling Harley doesn't use torque plates when honing the bores, that's why I usually see "window panes" when I pull one apart. A proper torque plate hone with the correct amount of clearance for the piston will run real quiet! |

I broke a piston skirt once but it had every excuse to do so. It was a clapped out RM125 year,1977. By the time I got it, it had passed hands four times in my town alone Well I read the book on it and adjusted the carb just right so it really sung! It was singing at full tilt up a steep sandpit wall on a very hot day when it let go. My bore was egg-shaped. I could actually SEE it. I doubt your Uly had that issue though. I would wager that there was probably a flaw in the piston from day one and the heat finally pushed it over the edge. I hope you can salvage your engine. |

I had engine issues a little while back. Might be the same thing. For me it was a broken channel lock that killed the inside of my engine. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/658606.html?1321503753 |

I finally got the repair estimate for my engine, $6800 Say what?!?!?!? The bike is not even worth that much. So a used engine is on the way to them that i bought on ebay. Its a good thing i love this bike so much because its still gonna be around $4000 to purchase and install the used engine. |
