Well, after four awesome years of service, yesterday my wife and I walked into the local BMW/Triumph dealer to see if they had 'year-end' specials... Probably not a smart move since I've bought bikes there before. The salesman, who is a great individual, who we both have a lot of respect for.. hell, that's true of both owners of the place as well, gives me a great price on a GS Adventure. The wife gives the OK and we start writing up the bike. Then my wife, who also rides, comes over to me and says, "you know we could buy two Tigers." So, we talk a bit about that and end up with the GS. Paperwork is handed over to one of the owners to work on and we leave to finish errands around town.

While driving, my wife convinces me it really is a better option for us to get the Tigers (we plan to ride to Alaska within the next couple of years), and I actually agree with her 100%. Especially with what we want to do with them. So, I call back the dealership. Talk with the owner since the salesman is out at lunch and he says 'no problem' on swapping out the bikes. The salesman calls me back and we chuckle since we thought we finished the debate about the bikes earlier... Anyhow, all is finished up and and later today, we'll stop by and pick up two 2012 Triumph Tiger 800's (My wife got the 800, I got the 800XC). I'll post a photo later...

Sadly, my '07 Uly will now go up for sale, as will my 1125CR (look for both in the classified section later today) and my wife's '04 BMW R1150R. We were already stretched with four bikes, but now with six, we have to thin the herd.

Nice choice! You're the second Bueller I know that has switched to the Tiger 800. I absolutely love that bike, but I need to be able to tour 2-up with camping gear, and I just don't think a mid-weight bike will do that well. I'll have my eye on the new Tiger 1200, but it's going to be priced way out of my reach.

Congrats on the new additions! What an excellent way to kick off a new year!

We looked at the new 800 cc Tigers this fall. Beautiful bikes, but like Mikef5000, we are limited by how much cargo the bike needs to handle until our son gets endorsed. One of the benefits of a 2 Uly household is being able to put him on the back of either bike.

I'm looking forward to see the Triumph 1200 EXplorer and be able to test ride it. Love my Uly but evolution is evolution.

Yup, it sorts things Out. Lotta evolution gone into the Uly to make it what it is.
Not a Triumph, which I'm sure is Sweet, & Probably far better than the Uly on Dirt, Definitely on Trail.
But Still a Big Bike.
Love having Choices!
Stickin w/My Uly for a While Yet, Best Tool for My job for it.
YMMV!

After taking the uly on some serious off-roading this summer, I've really had a hankering for a real dual-sport bike (thus the XC over the stock 800 that my wife got). I've loved and always will love my Uly, but it's time to think about something else for me. I sold my CR yesterday (again, I lOVED that bike), but never found time to ride it. It's gone to a single bike home, so it will have plenty of road time. Something I wasn't able to give it.

All this time I've been trying to convince my wife I need a really nice bike when what I should have been doing is convincing her I need TWO really nice bikes! Congrats. I really liked what I saw of these at IMS. I intend to test ride one myself. Get back to us with a thorough ride report!

"All this time I've been trying to convince my wife I need a really nice bike when what I should have been doing is convincing her I need TWO really nice bikes!" This is sort of the answer. Over the years and a LOT of money I have worked out I, because I like all forms of riding, need four bikes that are top of there class but trying to make the other half see why is something else. Its hard enough just to buy a can than anything else.

The big thing missing from the Tiger is that low-end torque that we have in the Uly motor. People can say what they want about the Uly when it comes to certain things (off-road for example), but rarely have I heard anybody who has ridden one complain about the engine.

The Tigers tend to have a nice higher pitched "pleasant" sound, unlike the low-end roar of the Uly. You either love it or hate it I suspect. I'll get use to it I'm sure. Most impressive is the weight. The Tiger feels super nimble on the street. Corners are an unknown as of now. But I'm sure the 21" front wheel on mine, won't give me that same sense of security that the Uly did flying around corners. ; )

All-in-all, it's not a bad replacement for the Uly. Although the new 1200 model will probably be more of a fair comparison.

Yeah I've been kicking around what's next. I thought about torque, HP, price, etc. And since I'm a nerd with apparently too much time on my hands, I created this:

The Tiger Explorer seems to come the closest, but I had to guess at the price. Since Triumph provides wet weight, and the Uly and S10 info was dry, I added 50lbs for gas and oil.

Haha! I make these ridiculous charts all the time. FWIW, I weighed my Uly in the garage at 507 lbs. with a full tank of gas.

Mike, your chart needs updating. For 2012, ABS is no longer optional on the Tigers. Also, the XC version (the one I have and the one you list) has spoked wheels with a tube. The Tiger 800 has cast iron wheels and is tubeless.

I knew there was a tube/tubless issue somewhere, couldn't remember where.

But yes, it's more than likely a bit dated, as I made this list in September when I was thinking about replacing my Uly. I have since decided to keep the Uly for at least another year or two (or three), and I decided to replace my Lightning instead:

I bought a bike with a V-TWIN engine because I like them and the engine is pretty much the heart of a bike for me.

Today most bikes are very good and its just about what works for you. At the end of the day you can pick holes in anything if you try hard enough and not very hard to do with a Buell. Saying that most all other brands are far from perfect.

ABS? Next thing you will want is floats on your surf boards, anti hangover pills with a quart of JD, a warranty with your vote in DC and to think we will forgive those traders who have/will cost us all in the now/future.

Why, yes! I would, in fact, like all of those things. Well, except for floats for a device that already floats.

I LOVE the CX. Sat on one a few months ago while testing out a bike for someone else and really liked it.

If I were getting a Dual Sport, it's the one I'd choose.
