S&S air cooled would be WAY COOL

and a little slap in the yapper for H-D

I'm in no hurry, still happy with the Uly......but am quite interested what comes next. I can live with water cooled, so long as it doesn't add much complexity or weight. I also don't desire the electro-gadgetry of a Beemer. K.I.S.S.

So, for me;
1. Good performance over a wide range of conditions. (handling & power)
2. Simple maintenance schedule. I like to ride, not wrench.
3. Light weight for the package. Goes w/o saying w/E.B., but well balanced, engineered weight.
4. Versatility. Good for spirited solo riding, proficient for the long haul with gear and superior pillion accommodations.
5. Good tire selection.
6. Roadside/trailside "fixability". The less disposable(read; breakable) proprietary pieces the better. A platform that allows one to access stuff w/o the aid of many specialized tools, lifts or other things not carried on the road.
7. Decent parts & tech support.

The Uly hits many of those marks adequately, some exceptionally. W/o the previously forced compromises it will be interesting what comes next........

I have not read all of that but can tell you this much. My 06 bike was stolen and nothing else out there was close enough for me and had to buy another. A well set up Uly with the right rubber and a person who knows how to ride a bike will out class almost any bike on the road today. The only thing it will not do is in the same class as a GS/KTM in something like a full on off road situation. Its not strong enough for that. On the other hand if people want to pay close to twice the amount for a GS of the same year/miles then so be it.

The only thing I'd change on my 2009 Uly is to go to the 2010 dual O2 sensor scheme, a stainless steel muffler, and the 2010 triple bearing rear wheel.

So basically, a 2010 Uly with a stainless steel muffler and Erik Buell Racing ECM.

I might get rid of the crossbar on the handlebars and add a bar-end mirror too.

Other than that, the 120 RWHP street version of the XBRR engine that Buell wanted to implement but H-D prevented would have been KILLER!

Mayber an overdrive gear for highway cruising?

Sounds great Ken. I get the "M123T" designation now! Call it an "M6T" (1+2+3=6) for short? : ]

I'm pretty much with Blake's ideas above. I've got the 2010 rear wheel. I saw a Badwebber's "parts built" XB12S a couple of weekends ago with a 2009 engine updated with 2010 headers and electronics, so that could be done without a ridiculous amount of effort. A stainless stock-type muffler would be nice. I'm sure Kevin would build them if there were enough demand.

Of course, I can always think of more things that would be nice to add to the Uly. Froggy's posted here that the 2011 Uly would have had ABS. Do "we" know anything else about the 2011 or other planned Ulys?

I kind of figured before too much longer, we'd have seen a redesign of the basic XB frame (which had been around since 2002). That would allow them to add more fuel capacity, maybe lower the seat height, make room for a bigger/quieter fan, add more steering lock without having to use "offset" forks, etc.

Air cooled engines are outdated - simple, basic and all that, yeah. But in the real world full of EPA regs and the like, it has to be water cooled.

Add to that, 1125's run better and make waaaay more horsepower.

I was hoping to trade my '07 in for an 1125 Uly about now.

Air cooled engines are all niche dinosaurs - even Porsche went water cooled engines 'cause they saw the light.

Erik pushed the Sporty engine as far as they could. The only reason that XB's had a Sporty-based engine in the first place is because HD ran off with Erik's watercooled motor for the VRod. The XB fuel-in-frame was designed from the get-go for a water cooled engine.

Who in their right mind puts an air cooled engine in a big metal box? No one! It was an after-thought...after-the-fact engineering on the fly to make the best of a bad situation. A situation that HD forced on Buell. And to Erik's credit (and genius), he made it work.

HD may have offered Erik a larger playground to market his product, but they forced him to play by their rules, which tied his hand, time and again.

So for me, no more air cooled, thanks (unless the EPA closes shop) - it's time to move forward from here.

I want an 1125-based Uly. Tuned for torque and geared for some light off-road use. Yep, that would make me real happy.

Just my 2cents.

Many new things are coming on line. There is a wankel motor/battery - no O/P shaft _ When you need electricity, it just starts spooling up, making juice, and it runs on the cheapest fuels you can buy. Electric smooth!

But I have to say it again, if you want the air/oil cooled route, the Vic engine is tough. A unitized S&S would really be an engineering masterpiece. Put water jackets on that, recalculate the fuel/air/spark - make some wild ass H/P. Water cooled does make the best power - PERIOD! Cleaner too.

The real trick is to be sophisticated in developing this power. Variable cams - direct injection. A really capable A/T bike needs to be able to have the rider stand on the pegs at walking speed while he is crossing some unreal technical obstacle in order to get to the 4 lane so he can pop it up to 130MPH to get to the local watering hole for bike nite.

This is a power priority.

"Air cooled engines are outdated"
Why?
What is your purpose?
Ride = Grin, Simple.
What puts a Grin on Your face?
Air Cooled = Butt Simple, less parts, less breakage, less Weight!
What RaceTrack do you ride, if "Power"=top end?
it WAS an "Adventure" bike design, though the 17" front takes it out of Soft stuff fun. But For Most "Improved" roads, it Excels, Making easy miles, a Plays like a SuperMoto with a Cat Diesel in it. Only place I'd add Power Would be on the Bottom, Magnuson supercharger would be Just Right, if it fit into the package, without affecting ergos, which are Perfect for Me.
Grunt Out of Corners is What Buell was Selling.
Nimble. Harley.
friggin Miracle!
I would change Very Little, in refinement of simplicity, strength & lightness. Handyness in Waking from Sleep...
Bigger Diameter Wheels, smooth the potholes, and get more Gyroscopic effect when counter steering, ever slide with a 23" front??? SpeedWay Baby! There is a reason.
Imaging the GRIP, with a ZTL brake that diameter!!! Leverage. Think that is where rubber may go, for an ALL-Road Adventure Bike, larger Wheels smooth the potholes.
But as it is, for My roads, I'm Real Happy with My Uly, As is, though with the XB9 primary, a 6th gear would be Jus' Perfect.

an off set crankshaft would be a nice addition also. Honda is starting to use those.

Engineering excellence - It's what's needed in the A/T bikes if you think about it.

After all, theoretically, you should be able to hop on a Uly of AX or GS or whatever A/T bike and go for hours on end all over the world. You need comfort, secure reliability, capacity, power, handling, and safety. The bikes we identify with are a cut above all other bikes since we really have to rely on the bike to get us into the rough stuff and back out of the rough stuff and back home in one piece.

Most other bikes can't really do that. Got to have that MOJO too.
