Had to take the bike into the dealer to fix my sidestand. The bolt broke in the frame, SS bolt in an alluminum frame... too risky for me to try to get it out.

163$ later dealer tells me that i am leaking oil from the stator or on the stator i guess?

Wants to charge me 3.5hrs labour to fix.

what do you guys think?

Exactly where is the leak?
The stator/clutch cover can be removed and replaced in an hour or so. Minimal mechanical ability required.

The stator wires do pass through the crankcase wall (near the starter) and have a pressed in rubber seal. That is a bit more involved to remedy. The stator wires do exit the case well above the case oil level though. Unless the plug has somehow fallen inward, this would not be a serious leak.

BTW. The Ulysses' sidestand is not attached to frame. It is screwed to the bottom of the engine case.

Yeah I'd be interested to know where the leak really is. The stator is bathed in oil...not too much of a way for it to leak.

If the primary cover is the issue- buy a new one from American Sport Bike (along with the shift shaft seal, clutch inspection cover gasket and primary chain adjustment cover gasket) for a few $$ and do it yourself- there is no magic to it.

If the rubber plug that Mark mentioned- pull the plug out and gob some RTV on it and push it back in. That's what I'd do anyway.

Interesting...

I am kind of new to this. I am no mechanic. However I do wish to learn seeing as in Montreal dealer support is terrible.

Don't have much details regarding the leak.

I do get reoccurring oil grease build up behind my cylinders at the base.

If that black film of dirty looking oil that is creeping out from under the starter area is your concern do not fear. Unless it is causing an oil drip or running a small stream that needs to be wiped off once in a while that is not really much of a leak.


That area is missed when it gets washed because of the nature of where it is. Probably half of it is road dirt stuck to a light film of oil.

Looks to me like the service department was kind of slow and needed some work.

I think what we are looking at there, and based on your descrition, is either a good rocker box leak, or a dreaded base gasket leak.

Either is really not a big deal for the mechanically inclined, just time consumming. The 3.5 hours they quoted you would be most likely be a good deal on a rocker box reseal, plus gaskets.

The pictures are not real clear though, and this is just a best guess.

In the first picture, if you were to reach over the case and down, you'd reach the spot where the wires leave the case.

It is possible to see in from the other side. Look along the base of the cylinder, just ahead of the crankcase hose fitting. You will be able to see the backside of the clutch housing. In the lower, forward, corner, there will be a black circle with two wires (three for pre-08 models). That is the stator lead plug.

Here's a look from the inside.






I generally have some oil residue back there, but it is not a problem and does not seem to come from the stator housing.

Ok well after closer inspection I discovered something! A severed line!

Here are some additional pics. Take a look at the last one. you will see that the line is completely severed!

What do you think? can't be good. the line comes out of the top of the engine (crank case? transmission?) and got severed by a hot exhaust pipe. I can see the other piece of the hose/line continue aftarwards.

Looks like your transmission vent line. pop a new piece of hose on it and you'll be set.
