When I put the comfort kit on my 09 the fan runs all the time except at stops. Before the comfort kit the fan usually stayed off when riding and came on at stops. It bothered me that it was reversed thinking that stops where the time to run the fan. |

The comfort kit ecm flash for 08 thru 09 Ulys make the fan run just like the 2010 ULY and that is that your fan is programmed to run all the time above 15mph and not at shutdown unless the rear head is very very hot. The 06/07 Ulys did not get a comfort kit flash, so they run to stock ECM coding. |

I am finding that the fan comes when the swingarm oil is around 190-195 F. Wouldn't even come on with RSS on and the oil would be 205 to 210. I believe the RSS isn't doing much accept fooling the rear head temp sensor. I'm keeping mine off for the trip to Sturgis this Friday. My son had his RSS so I'll try to collect data at gas stations. |

The comfort kit was a measure to keep the seat and surrounding area cooler for the comfort of the rider more so than to cool the oil. If you recall the complaint was about the hot seat and broiled right leg. What ever it did to the engine cooling was the compromise.
I still run my '06 fan all of the time with no problems from the ECM. |

Keep in mind that the under seat shroud blows more hot air on the rear swingarm witch will raise the temp at the thermometer. |

I think both EG and Etennuly have a point. It is called a Comfort Kit, not an Engine Cooling Kit. The question is, what's more important to you - your comfort or the engine's? I'm pretty happy with the under-seat shroud. The right side scoop I thought was more for looks since the left side had a scoop. And I threw away the header pipe thingy cause that just looked weird. But I'm not a big fan of running the engine hotter than it should be. Removing the RSS is definitely something to ponder. |

As promised, I looked at swingarm oil temps on both our bikes throughout the 1600 mile Sturgis trip. We both have comfort kits installed but I've taken the RSS off and reinstalled the original plastic piece. We traveled mostly at 70 miles per hour on the way out since the posted limit was 65 mph. I checked at gas station stops and my son's was always cooler by 5 or 10 degrees. I thought mine would be cooler but I think I understand what is going on. Here's what I'm guessing . The right side scoop helps cool at highway speeds but really does seem to keep the fan from coming on when it should. I noticed my son's bike would not have the fan on until shutdown even though the swingarm oil temp dipstick clearly showed that the oil was hot enough to warrant the fan being on. My fan came on and would stay on and his wouldn't come on until he shutdown. My oil temp would be anywhere from 200 to sometimes almost 220 F. His oil was always within 5 or 10 degrees of my oil readings. I firmly believe that yes, the RSS scoop helps but must cool that temp sensor more than it should. Also, the shroud directs the hot air on the swingarm and keeps the aluminum swingarm hotter than it was pre-comfort kit shroud. My oil temps are hotter than I've ever seen them before I installed that shroud. Even with the RSS installed the oil is hotter than pre-comfort kit installation days. At this point I think I will remove the shroud, reinstall the RSS and see how that affects the swingarm oil temp. When that oil gets near 220 F my butt gets hot and that never used to happen when the oil was 25 degrees cooler. Comfort kit my ass. |
