Yep, happened to me and as I type I am waiting for my wife to come the 30 miles over to where I work to pick me up with the trailer. I geared up and fired her off and when I put it in 1st nothing happened.....I thought whats wrong with my tranny???? Put her in neutral and then back to 1st and again nothing....looked to my rear and saw the belt lying there on the asphault. So here I am with no other vehicle except the wifes Tahoe, no money in the bank, and in a thunderstorm. Talk about the worst possible time for this to happen. Bad thing for my motorcycling days is that for some reason I have been loosing interest of late. only 18,000 soft commuter miles on the Uly and it's already happened. I know the feeling ALL too well. For about the first 30 minutes after the last time it happened to me I would have given the bike to anyone with $500 and a ride. But never fear, scrape enough money for a new belt and you'll love it again. Then, about 5000 miles into the new belt, scrape up enough for another new belt, put it on and keep the old one for a spare. | ||

My 2008 failed after only 16,000 (rough) commuter miles. They just don't last forever. Tuber belts seem to last longer for some reason. | ||

XT here. Lost a tooth around 10,000. Warranty kicked in with a new belt. At 20,000 miles, I replaced it with new and have the old one for a spare. | ||

So did your belt fall off as you parked the bike or did just putting it in gear break it? I am bewildered a bit. Did you not feel the bike even attempt to go forward? If it was just lying there I would be first suspecting another Uly rider broke his belt and needed mine.....then I would be taking a look to see if it was cut or if something jambed into the guards or pulleys and look for pulley damage. It just doesn't make sense that parking the bike would break it. You would have to have felt it move to break it, right? | ||

When my belt broke on my 06 at 24k miles I did not feel it go. I was at a light trying to start going and no movement. Belt was just laying there slightly behind the bike. The belt broke at a damaged spot so it probably essentially failed during downshifting as I came to a stop at the light. There must have been only a thread left holding it on. Talk about no drama... | ||

And chains are better, how? Last time that I broke a chain it whipped through the countershaft area. Cracked the crankcase in front, took off the gear position indicator switch (resulting in a massive oil leak) and bent and gouged the shift shaft. I have never heard of a belt causing damage to the bike. The only advantage that I see to a chain is that it is easier to install the replacement. | ||

Breaking a belt feels like the bike goes into neutral. I'll take a belt over a chain any day. So much cleaner and other than it breaking, there is nothing else to worry about. Mine lasted 25,000 miles and luckily was no more than a mile from home. | ||

You guys just reminded me that my belt is "due". I've had a new belt sitting around in the garage for almost a year now. Procrastinated long enough.... Just got back from the garage. It only took about 30 minutes to stick the new belt on. Keeping the old one as a spare.  | ||

We have a thread on belt life going over at ADV. I found my belt was very loose coming home from a trip. I was very gentle on the bike the last 150 miles home. Also guys, You need to check your pulley condition, My pulleys were so worn they felt like 100 grit sandpaper. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54 6118&page=5 Go to post 72 and check out how poor my pulleys are. | ||

You will hardly get your hands dirty either. 175 USD for a belt? Its about 330 USD in this part of the World if your lucky. 175 USD? Dude you cant get a Whopper with cheese meal for THAT here. | ||

Well folks I was trying to hang on to this one as long as I could but the economy has really made that impossible. After 12 years and 4 Buells I guess I'm calling it quits I'll reluctantly be putting my dream bike up for sale here in the next day or so, I just hope someone here on Badweb gets her and treats her well. BOLO for the 2009 XB12XP in the classifieds....  |
