Ken - go ahead and get an Erik Buell Racing computer for it. They'll program it for whatever fan logic you prefer...and you'll get one SMOKIN' map to boot. Some of the best money I've spent on my '06.

Also, since you have an XP...are you planning on hooking in a light kit? Ever? Or could I talk you into surgically removing the large plug and its subharness for a project I'm considering?

DCC - if you have part numbers for what you're waiting on, I can make some calls and see if anyone has them in stock to try and expedite...

Blasterd,
They probably soaked your 77 connector and blasted water into your wheel bearings. No joke.

Have not had my 09X for the last 3 months. They finally are giving me a new engine. This has been going on since May. Back and forth to the dealer 3 times for my vibration problems. Changed the front isolator the first time which took 4 weeks to get back. Still no good. Brought it back to them 3 months ago for the second time. They changed the rear motor mount and still no good. Finally after doing all kinds of tests per HD requests the dealer finally convinced HD to just give me a new engine. I do not think they ever did find out what the problem was. So the 09X has been in the shop for a total of 4 months since May. Between the 09 1125CR, 09 1125R and the 09 XB12X There has not been a day since the beginning of March that I have not had one of those bikes at the dealer. I think I have an assigned parking spot there at this point. Ride one up and pick one up. And the best part is I am not done. Once the 09X is finished I will be bringing the 1125CR up for the clutch weep to be fixed. When that is done I will be bringing up the 1125R for the electrical issues that are still happening. Lets see if I can go a full year with a bike at the dealer.

Thank god I have my 06 Street Rod to ride when the Buells are down.

Echo,
I feel ya brother... I decided on my 09 XT with 1500 miles to swap from the low seat to an X high(standard)seat, I found the epoxy on the both ecm connectors cracking. I removed the ecm from it's stock location and stuffed it down next to the battery. No more worries at least with that part.

Rkc00,
I'm right there with ya too... My 09 XT has been as bug ridden as my 06 X was. I barely have 5K on my 09 and it has been in the shop 5 times just since April. That is why I purchased my ST1300 to go along with my Buell's. At this point, I treat my Buell like a one off custom... I never know how reliable it will be so I always carry a back up.

I have not had these problems with my 06' with 30,000 miles on it. In hindsight, I think Buell would have been better served to have not changed the engine as they did in 08'. My wife's 07' Sporty has the auto tps and timing and 2 O2 sensors and certainly doesn't look like the Buell 08/10 engine. The 08' ULY should've kept the same engine and just been improved with the larger oil cooler, improved kickstand, heated grips, auto tps and timing, second O2 sensor,3 bearing rear wheel, improved steering radius, and of course a stainless steel muffler. I know I'll be flamed for such sedition but what did that 08/10 really accomplish that couldn't have been done with the 06/07 engine, not a thing. Hp and torque remained the same and could only claim a few hundred rpm increase. Had HP/TQ improved then I might see the reasoning behind the change. Buell engineered their own demise. Change for change sake only is not always the way to go. Flame on.

It's on my list Rat, may be a while though...

I keep going back and forth on it but I think after this week with the time change I want to add some more lighting. If I change my mind yo will be the first to know. Can I ask about your project?

Just considering retrofitting a red/red light kit onto my 06 Ulysses...for "visibility" purposes, of course ; )

Mike,
I had the front iso on my 09X replaced a few months ago because the rubber on it was cracked. Within the past few weeks, mine has started to have a lot more vibration as well. Bags shake like hell at idle and it's generally just buzzier (new word) than what it was most of the summer- what lead you to the engine mounts, and what were your symptoms?

I've dealt with buzz issues since day one. Some of the things to look at.

Dry heim joints

Horn rubbing

Ground strap rubbing on the air intake bulk head

Primary chain need to be as tight as specs allow

Handlebars cannot be laid back - line it up with the forks

rear spring and damper adjustment needs to be a bit stiff

Frequent TPS adjustments - Ign on - crank throttle on 1 second - off one second X 3 times - PS - make sure the throttle cable is adjusted snuggly - makes a difference.

GASOLINE! Quality premium gas makes a big difference. Hard to find the best coming from a single hose gas dispenser.

Once the earth moon and stars line up with all the little tricks, she will actually smooth out for a bit. But the Uly / Sportster motor is a high performance stone axe. Great performance parameters BUT not as refined as a Triumph triple or a Honda V4. Good luck.

One more thing - Heavier oil seems to help - I'm running 10 40 Amsoil - smoother with 20 50. Next change to straight 60 Amsoil.

Took a closer look when I got home today and I think I have another front iso that's starting to fail...

Alex,
I do not think the isolator was the problem that was causing the high vibrations on my 09X. There was something in the engine that was out of balance that was causing a very bad vibration at decel. When the revs would get to the 2000 rpm level and down the bike would shake like a jackhammer. It was bone jarring. I also felt a constant buzz at higher rpm levels when riding. More than the first year of riding it. Since I ride in a lot of traffic from day to day it was not comfortable riding it for any long period of time. The front isolator was totally ripped apart when the dealer changed it out. The bike did the same thing after the new isolator was installed. HD told them to change the rear Isolator next. Same thing after that was changed. Then they had them remove the luggage racks and run it. The problem got worse. Finally the dealer just through there hands up and said enough is enough. They convinced HD to get me a new engine. The engine was in last week but they had sent out my header and muffler to get hot jet coated and have not gotten it back yet. Seems that the first jet coat was pealing before it left the coaters shop and they are doing it over. Should get them next week.

It had about 6000 miles when it started to get bad.

10 weeks in the shop and counting, i called hd customer service and they were going to look into why it's taking so long and get back to me on weds, but they never did. so now it's in the hands of an attorney and the lemon law. looks like my next buell will be from Erik Buell Racing.

Didn't Buell make your 2010 ULY and wasn't Erik in charge of that company? Your logic escapes me.

So the theory is that the engine was thrashing about more than it should have and then killed isolators?

I would think if it was that bad, shiny bits of metal would have been ejected out of the case!

I remember taking a tour of HD back in 1988. I was there for the 85th birthday party. (I was riding a BMW at the time) They said they balanced ten cranks and then took an average of where the balancing holes were drilled and how much was drilled out. Then the balanced them all the same. Well, I find that insane! That's why Indian's were a better machine as they balanced every engine correctly. I was impressed with a lot of other things though and bought an 89 heritage softtail classic. Well that was the shakingest POS I've ever owned!! A friend, who also owned a softtail, took mine for a ride and told me it was a POS! Well I put 22,000 miles on it, (It did look really good) and traded for an electra glide sport WITH A RUBBER MOUNTED ENGINE!! I don't know how Buell balanced their engines but I would hope they did a more consistent job than Harley did!!

My logic is that 10+ weeks in the shop with no end in sight is unacceptable. I obviously can't get my bike replaced with a new one from HD since they don't make them anymore. so when Erik Buell Racing makes a street bike that i am interested in i will buy it from them.Simple enough.

That amount of time in the shop is unacceptable.
You shouldn't have to make payments on a thing you can't use.
The two months should be waived.

"Should" isn't "legally obligated" though.

It feels like a Thanksgiving miracle, not only is the bike supposed to be fixed, the dealers delivering it 80 miles to my house tomorrow. I really do hope it's fixed this time. the v-strom just isn't the same.
